Posted on May 29, 2026 By Aga Co No Comments on That morning, I walked onto the veranda and noticed something unusual moving inside the wall.

The first thing I noticed that morning was movement.

Not outside the window.

Not in the yard.

Inside the wall.

At first, I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me. The surface wasn’t shaking or cracking, yet something beneath it seemed to be pushing against the plaster. Every few seconds there was another twitch, another strange bulge, as if a living creature was trapped inside and desperately trying to escape.

My stomach tightened immediately.

One word appeared in my mind before any other.

Snake.

The possibility alone was enough to send a surge of panic through me. Every instinct told me to back away, shut the door, and pretend I had never seen it.

But curiosity can be surprisingly powerful.

Despite the fear, I couldn’t stop watching.

The movement continued.

A tail suddenly appeared through a narrow crack in the wall, jerking wildly before disappearing again. The sight only made my imagination worse. Whatever was trapped in there clearly wanted out.

For several minutes, I stood frozen, torn between leaving and getting a closer look.

Eventually, curiosity won.

Slowly, I stepped forward.

The closer I got, the more details I could see. Something about the movement seemed wrong for a snake. Instead of smooth, controlled motions, it looked frantic and disorganized. Whatever was trapped inside wasn’t slithering.

It was struggling.

Desperately.

As I leaned closer, the shape finally became clear.

Tiny legs.

Glossy scales.

A long body much smaller than I had imagined.

It wasn’t a snake at all.

It was a skink.

The moment I recognized it, my fear began to fade.

What had looked like a terrifying creature moments earlier was actually a small lizard trapped in a terrible situation. Its movements weren’t threatening. They were signs of exhaustion and panic.

Suddenly, the situation felt completely different.

Instead of wanting to escape from it, I wanted to help it.

The skink continued twisting and clawing at the crack, unable to free itself. Every movement seemed weaker than the one before.

I knew that if I walked away, it might not survive.

My hands trembled as I reached toward the wall.

Part of me still worried it might bite.

Another part worried I would accidentally hurt it while trying to help.

Carefully, I loosened the area around the crack and gently worked the trapped animal free.

For a brief moment, it remained perfectly still in my hand.

Then it paused, almost as if catching its breath.

A second later, it darted away across the ground and vanished into nearby cover.

Just like that, it was gone.

The wall was quiet again.

The room looked exactly the same as before.

Yet something inside me had changed.

Later, I learned more about skinks and discovered that they are harmless, shy creatures that spend most of their lives avoiding humans. The monster my imagination had created never existed. The only thing trapped that morning wasn’t the skink.

It was my fear.

What began as a moment of panic ended as a lesson about assumptions. The frightening unknown became something small, vulnerable, and deserving of compassion.

And strangely enough, helping that tiny creature brought me a sense of calm I hadn’t expected.

Sometimes the things that scare us most aren’t dangerous at all.

Sometimes they simply need a little help getting free.
