Things You Absolutely Should Not Put in a Dishwasher

Posted on July 8, 2026 By Aga Co No Comments on Things You Absolutely Should Not Put in a Dishwasher

It looked like an ordinary kitchen photo. Bright countertops, spotless dishes, and the warm, welcoming style that has made Ina Garten’s home famous for years. But eagle-eyed viewers quickly noticed one unexpected detail tucked inside the open dishwasher: a set of expensive kitchen knives resting in the rack. Within hours, the image had sparked an online debate that spread far beyond celebrity kitchens. Home cooks, professional chefs, and cleaning experts all weighed in, asking the same question: Have millions of people been unknowingly damaging some of the most valuable items in their kitchens every time they press the start button? What began as a simple photograph soon evolved into a much larger conversation about everyday habits, costly mistakes, and the surprising number of household items that should never go into a dishwasher.

For many families, the dishwasher has become one of the most frequently used appliances in the home.

It saves time, reduces effort, and handles everything from breakfast plates to holiday dinner cleanup with the push of a button. Because of that convenience, it’s easy to assume almost every kitchen item belongs inside.

In reality, however, many everyday objects simply aren’t designed to withstand the intense heat, powerful water pressure, and harsh detergents used during a dishwasher cycle.

Kitchen knives are among the most common examples.

Although placing them in the dishwasher may seem harmless, repeated washing can gradually dull even high-quality blades. The combination of high-pressure water, contact with other utensils, and strong detergents can wear down the sharpened edge far more quickly than careful handwashing.

In addition to damaging the blade itself, dishwasher cycles may also weaken certain knife handles, particularly those made from wood or bonded materials.

Many professional chefs recommend washing quality knives immediately after use with warm water, mild soap, and a soft cloth before drying them thoroughly by hand.

Wooden kitchen utensils present another hidden problem.

Wood naturally expands when exposed to moisture and contracts as it dries. Repeated dishwasher cycles expose wooden spoons, cutting boards, rolling pins, and serving utensils to intense heat and prolonged soaking, eventually causing cracks, warping, splitting, or rough surfaces.

Once those cracks develop, bacteria can settle inside tiny openings that become increasingly difficult to clean properly.

Cast iron cookware is another item that deserves special care.

Unlike many modern pans, cast iron develops a protective seasoning layer through repeated cooking and proper maintenance. Dishwasher detergents and prolonged exposure to water can strip away that seasoned coating, leaving the pan vulnerable to rust while reducing its naturally nonstick surface.

Instead, cast iron is generally cleaned with hot water, minimal soap when appropriate, gentle scrubbing, and immediate drying before applying a light coat of oil.

Nonstick cookware can also suffer from frequent dishwasher use.

Although some manufacturers label certain pans as dishwasher safe, repeated exposure to strong detergents and high temperatures may gradually reduce the effectiveness of the nonstick coating over time.

Handwashing often helps preserve these surfaces significantly longer.

Fine crystal and delicate glassware require similar caution.

Thin crystal glasses and decorative stemware may become cloudy, scratched, or weakened after repeated dishwasher cycles. Sudden temperature changes can also increase the risk of tiny fractures that may not become visible until much later.

Heirloom china presents another concern.

Many older dishes contain decorative finishes, metallic trim, or delicate glazes that can gradually fade or become damaged when repeatedly exposed to dishwasher detergents and heat. Family pieces passed down through generations often deserve the extra few minutes required for careful handwashing.

Copper cookware is equally vulnerable.

Dishwasher detergents may dull the metal’s natural shine while encouraging discoloration or tarnishing. Regular hand cleaning with appropriate copper cleaners helps maintain both appearance and performance.

Insulated travel mugs and reusable water bottles may also be affected.

Some insulated containers rely on vacuum seals between inner and outer walls. High dishwasher temperatures can occasionally weaken those seals, reducing the mug’s ability to keep beverages hot or cold.

Checking the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions remains the safest approach before placing insulated drinkware inside the dishwasher.

Plastic items deserve careful attention as well.

Not all plastics tolerate dishwasher heat equally. Lower-quality containers may warp, crack, or release chemicals when exposed to high temperatures. Whenever possible, only plastics clearly labeled as dishwasher safe should be cleaned this way, and many experts recommend placing them on the top rack where temperatures tend to be lower.

Certain kitchen appliances include removable parts that should never be submerged or placed inside a dishwasher.

Wooden handles, electric components, specialty coatings, and delicate seals may all be damaged if cleaned improperly.

Consulting the manufacturer’s instructions helps avoid expensive mistakes.

The widespread discussion surrounding Ina Garten’s kitchen photo resonated because it highlighted something many people rarely consider.

Convenience sometimes comes with hidden costs.

A dishwasher saves valuable time, but repeatedly exposing treasured kitchen tools to harsh cleaning conditions may gradually shorten their lifespan without us noticing until the damage becomes permanent.

Many of the items people value most aren’t necessarily the most expensive.

Perhaps it’s a grandmother’s wooden spoon.

A wedding gift.

A favorite chef’s knife purchased after years of saving.

A cast iron skillet that’s been part of family meals for decades.

These objects often carry memories alongside their practical use.

Taking a few extra minutes to wash them by hand helps preserve both their function and the stories connected to them.

Ultimately, knowing what belongs inside the dishwasher isn’t about following rigid rules.

It’s about understanding how different materials respond to heat, moisture, and detergent so we can make informed choices that protect the things we rely on every day.

The dishwasher remains one of the greatest conveniences in the modern kitchen.

Used wisely, it saves countless hours of work.

But recognizing which items deserve a little extra care ensures that your favorite cookware, cherished family pieces, and trusted kitchen tools remain beautiful and functional for many years to come.

Sometimes the greatest luxury isn’t finishing the dishes a few minutes faster.

It’s opening your cabinets years later and finding that the items you love most still look—and perform—just as wonderfully as the day you first brought them home.
