Newlyweds killed in tragic helicopter crash while on honeymoon in Greece have been identified

A British newlywed couple and an experienced pilot were killed when their helicopter crashed on the Greek island of Sifnos near the end of a honeymoon flight. The couple were identified as Alexander Alex Cromie and Marie Ebert. The pilot was 55-year-old Giorgos Raikos, a former air force officer who had been described as highly experienced. All three died when the aircraft descended into a field and erupted in flames.

Cromie and Ebert had been traveling from Markopoulo, near Athens, to Sifnos on Monday, August 17. The helicopter was expected to land at about 6:15 p.m. and depart again roughly twenty-five minutes later. The trip was almost complete when the normal approach changed into an emergency that unfolded in view of people on the island.

Shortly after 6 p.m., Raikos contacted air traffic control and reported that he was preparing to land. Communication then stopped. Video shared after the crash appeared to show the helicopter spinning while rapidly losing altitude. It continued rotating as it fell, struck the ground, and exploded, sending smoke over the area and scattering wreckage.

Emergency crews arriving at the field found devastating destruction. Manolis Foundoulakis, the deputy mayor of Sifnos, said the three occupants were killed instantly and that almost nothing remained of the helicopter. Two victims were reportedly found among the wreckage, while a third was located a short distance away. The force of the impact and fire left rescuers with no opportunity to save those aboard.

Residents near the crash site reported hearing a loud and unusual noise from the helicopter before it fell. Their observations may help investigators reconstruct the final moments, but such accounts do not by themselves establish a cause. Investigators must compare witness statements with flight information, communications, maintenance records, and examination of the wreckage before reaching conclusions.

Weather was reportedly normal, and strong winds were not affecting the island at the time. That information has increased attention on other possible explanations, including mechanical failure, but the inquiry remains responsible for determining what happened. The pilot’s military background and experience also make it especially important not to substitute assumptions for the technical findings. Experience can reduce some risks, yet it cannot rule out a sudden equipment problem or other emergency.

News of the couple’s deaths reached colleagues in Britain, where both had established careers. Cromie worked for the United States based investment firm Blackstone and was listed as a vice president in private wealth solutions. The company said it was shocked by the deaths of Cromie, his wife, and the pilot, and described Cromie as beloved by the people who knew and worked with him.

Ebert had joined the management consulting firm Bain and Company in July 2025 as a senior specialist in market reputation. Her colleagues also expressed shock after reports of the accident involving her and her husband. The professional statements added personal context to the names released publicly: the newlyweds were not simply passengers in an aviation report but people with families, friends, and workplaces suddenly confronting their loss.

The timing made the tragedy particularly painful. A honeymoon is meant to begin a shared chapter, and the couple were only minutes from reaching the island. The helicopter was scheduled to land, allow its passengers to continue their visit, and then depart. Instead, the approach became the final stage of a journey none of them completed.

Investigators will examine the aircraft and available flight information, including the strange sound described by residents and the end of communication after the pilot announced his approach. Until that work is finished, reports of a specific mechanical fault remain possibilities rather than confirmed findings. A careful account separates what witnesses saw from what experts can ultimately prove.

For the families of Cromie, Ebert, and Raikos, even a definitive technical answer cannot reverse the loss. The investigation may explain why an aircraft flown by an experienced pilot suddenly lost control so close to landing. The human story remains three deaths, a marriage cut short during its honeymoon, and communities in Greece and Britain mourning lives that ended without warning.
