Little Johnny Is in Grade 7 — His Teacher Asked a Simple Question, and His Answer Left the Entire Class Laughing
Little Johnny was a seventh-grade student who was well known at school for his clever remarks and unexpected answers. Although he sometimes struggled to take his lessons seriously, he had a special talent for making his classmates laugh, often without even trying.
One morning, during mathematics class, his teacher decided to test the students with a simple question about money. She wanted to see whether they understood basic addition and could apply what they had learned to everyday situations.
After explaining a few examples on the board, she turned toward Johnny, who was sitting at his desk looking rather relaxed.
“Johnny,” she began, “let’s see how good you are at mathematics today. I have a question for you.”
Johnny sat up straight and smiled. “I’m ready, teacher!”
The teacher nodded and presented her question.
“Imagine that you have five dollars in your pocket. You go to your father and ask him to give you another five dollars. How much money will you have in total?”
Johnny didn’t answer immediately. He looked down at his desk, scratched his head for a moment and appeared to be thinking very carefully.
Finally, he looked up and confidently replied, “Five dollars, teacher.”
The teacher frowned, clearly disappointed by his answer.
“Five dollars?” she repeated. “Are you sure you understand the question? You already have five dollars, and then you ask your father for another five. Five plus five equals ten. So why do you think you would still have only five dollars?”
Johnny remained calm and shook his head.
“No, teacher. I would still have five dollars.”
By now, several students had started whispering to one another, wondering whether Johnny was deliberately giving the wrong answer or genuinely didn’t understand the lesson.
The teacher decided to try one more time.
“Listen carefully, Johnny,” she said, speaking slowly. “You have five dollars. You ask your father for five more dollars, and he gives them to you. How much money do you have then?”
Johnny looked directly at her and answered without hesitation.
“Five dollars!”
The teacher put down her marker and sighed.
“Johnny, this is basic mathematics! If you have five dollars and receive another five dollars, you should have ten dollars. What makes you so certain that you would only have five?”
Johnny grinned, leaned back in his chair and delivered his explanation.
“Because you don’t know my father, teacher!”
For a moment, the classroom fell completely silent.
Then the students suddenly burst into laughter. Some covered their mouths, others slapped their desks, and a few could barely catch their breath. Even the teacher struggled to maintain her serious expression.
After a few seconds, she shook her head and laughed along with the class.
“Well, Johnny,” she said, “I suppose that’s a different kind of mathematics!”
Johnny simply smiled and returned to his seat, looking perfectly satisfied with his answer.
And from that day forward, whenever the teacher wanted to remind the class that five plus five equals ten, someone would inevitably whisper, “Unless you have Johnny’s father!”
