I wanted to repair the roof of my house.

Posted on November 8, 2026 By Aga Co No Comments on I wanted to repair the roof of my house.

I climbed up onto my roof expecting to find something ordinary that needed fixing. Maybe a loose metal panel, a damaged screw, or a section of wood that had started to rot. It was supposed to be a simple repair, the kind of job you finish without thinking much about it afterward.

But then I noticed something lying on the metal sheets.

At first, I couldn’t understand what I was looking at. It was a twisted, dark shape, partially hidden near the edge of the roof. It looked strangely out of place, almost as if someone had left something there and forgotten about it. There was no movement, no sound, and no obvious sign of what it might have been. Just a small, shriveled form that immediately made my skin crawl.

I stopped what I was doing and stared at it.

The longer I looked, the stranger it seemed. From one angle, it resembled a piece of dried material tangled against the roof. From another, it looked disturbingly like the remains of a tiny creature. I didn’t want to get too close, but curiosity kept me there. I leaned forward carefully, trying to make sense of the shape without disturbing it.

Every new angle seemed to create another question. How had it ended up there? How long had it been sitting on the roof? Had it fallen from somewhere above, or had it somehow made its way onto the metal sheets? There was no clear answer.

My imagination began filling in the missing details. Perhaps a bird had brought its prey up there and left it behind. Maybe a small animal had crawled into that quiet, hidden place and died without anyone noticing. Or perhaps it had been there for months, exposed to the sun, wind, rain, and changing temperatures, slowly losing every recognizable feature.

The roof suddenly felt different. What had started as an ordinary repair had turned into an unexpected discovery, and I found myself caught between wanting to investigate and wanting to climb back down.

Eventually, I looked more closely and began to recognize the details. Beneath the dark, dried exterior were delicate bones. There was a tiny skull, and the body appeared to have folded inward as time gradually reduced it to a fragile outline of what it once was.

That was when the fear began to disappear.

It wasn’t a monster hiding on my roof. It wasn’t anything mysterious or supernatural, and there was no strange explanation waiting to be uncovered. It was simply the remains of a small animal whose life had ended long before I discovered it.

For a moment, I felt something I hadn’t expected. Not exactly sadness, and not quite relief, but a quiet sense of respect. Whatever had happened, this little creature had once been alive. It had moved, breathed, and existed in the same world I moved through every day. Now, its tiny remains had become part of a place I had walked beneath countless times without ever knowing they were there.

I stood still for a little longer, looking at the fragile shape resting on the metal roof. Then I carefully finished what I needed to do and climbed back down.

But the experience stayed with me.

I had gone up there thinking only about a repair, focused on loose panels and damaged materials. I came down thinking about something much bigger: how much of the world exists just beyond our attention, hidden in corners we rarely examine and places we pass beneath without a second thought.

Sometimes, an ordinary day reveals something unexpected. And sometimes, the things that frighten us at first turn out to be reminders of how fragile life really is.

That little discovery didn’t change the roof, but it changed the way I looked at the space above my head. I realized that even the most familiar places can hold stories we never knew were there.
