A quiet afternoon walk turned into a nightmare in seconds.
One moment, two little girls were laughing beside their mother, fascinated by the bushes and flowers along the path. The next, both toddlers were coughing, dizzy, and struggling to remain on their feet.
Their mother, Emma Lowell, knew immediately that something was terribly wrong.
At first, she thought perhaps one of the girls had swallowed something.
Then she noticed the other child showing similar symptoms.
Their faces had changed. Their breathing sounded different, and the playful energy they’d had only moments earlier was disappearing frighteningly fast.
Emma’s heart began pounding.
She picked up both girls as best she could, calling their names and desperately trying to keep them awake and responsive.
“Look at Mommy. Stay with me.”
But she had no idea what was happening.
There had been no obvious accident.
No fall.
No warning.
They had simply been walking through a familiar area in Cedar Falls when both children suddenly became ill.
Then Emma remembered the fire station nearby.
She didn’t stop to debate what she should do.
She ran.
Carrying two frightened toddlers, Emma rushed toward the Cedar Falls Fire Station as panic clawed at her chest.
Every few steps, she looked down at her daughters.
“Please, just breathe.”
The station came into view.
Emma pushed herself harder.
By the time she reached the entrance, she was exhausted and terrified.
The fire station door opened, and firefighters immediately realized this wasn’t an ordinary visitor.
“Please help them!” Emma cried.
Training took over.
Within seconds, firefighters were checking the children while asking Emma rapid questions.
What happened?
Had they eaten anything?
Had they touched something?
Did either child have known allergies?
Emma struggled to answer.
“They were fine,” she kept saying. “They were just playing.”
One firefighter carefully monitored their breathing while another prepared oxygen.
Small masks were fitted over the girls’ faces.
The sight almost broke Emma.
She stood beside them, holding their hands and whispering the same words repeatedly.
“Mommy’s here.”
Outside, the calm afternoon had been replaced by sirens.
Paramedics were called, and the firefighters continued monitoring the children while waiting for additional medical support.
Every minute felt endless.
Emma watched the firefighters’ expressions, searching their faces for reassurance.
Then one of the girls began responding more clearly.
Her sister followed.
It was only a small improvement, but to Emma it felt enormous.
Paramedics arrived and transported.
