On February 29, 1928, Annie Blanche Banks, the future Tempest Storm, was born in the small Georgian rural town of Eastman. Her early years were characterized by a severe lack of opportunities and a difficult home life. She fled her family at the age of fourteen in search of employment as a waitress in Columbus, Georgia, since she was so desperate to get away from her surroundings. She married a U.S. Marine in an effort to formally separate herself from her parents, but the marriage was dissolved twenty-four hours later. She remarried at the age of fifteen, this time to a local shoe dealer, but even then, she had her sights set on a future that stretched well beyond the little Southern towns and hosiery mills. Driven by an unwavering fixation with making it to Hollywood, she finally divorced her second husband.
During a time working as a cocktail server, Annie changed into Tempest. A client requested if she may do a striptease after noticing her captivating physical presence and innate charm. She famously recounted questioning what it even was, having grown up in a protected atmosphere, and being told it was just dancing while taking off one’s clothing. She accepted the risk despite her initial concerns that her mother would reject her. A celebrity was formed when a fellow performer proposed the moniker Tempest Storm. She made her burlesque debut in the late 1940s, and audiences quickly fell in love with her acts, which focused more on expertly planned elegance and high-fashion splendor than shock.
In addition to being a performer, Tempest Storm was a trailblazer who pushed the limits of what women could say on stage. She performed on stages with other luminaries like Blaze Starr at a period of severe restrictions, and she costarred with Bettie Page in legendary burlesque movies like Teaserama and Buxom Beautease. Her distinctive red hair and beautiful curves were trademarks that attracted sizable audiences. When she visited the University of Colorado in 1955, at the height of her fame, 1,500 students rushed the stage like a herd of animals, causing destruction in their wake and almost starting a riot. She led a rigorous lifestyle despite the chaos around her, abstaining from drinking and smoking in favor of orange juice and a health-conscious regimen of saunas and whirlpool treatments. In a field that frequently disregarded women as they grew older, she notably avoided plastic surgery, believing that her inherent beauty was the secret to her longevity.
But her personal life was what really put her fortitude to the test. Although she had love relationships with some of the most well-known men in the world, such as Mickey Rooney and Elvis Presley, her marriage to jazz musician Herb Jeffries in 1959 turned out to be her most contentious move. As the first Black singing cowboy in Hollywood, Jeffries’ relationship shattered significant racial taboos during a time when interracial marriage was still prohibited in many US states. Storm lost a lot of business as a result of the quick and harsh response and the decline in public interest brought on by the prevailing societal biases. She remained close to Jeffries until the end of his life and proudly raised their daughter, Patricia Ann, despite the marriage’s final dissolution.
Tempest Storm’s brightness never diminished, in contrast to many of her contemporaries whose stars faded with time.
