There is no courtesy warning when rock bottom arrives. It doesn’t ask for permission before completely upending your life, nor does it knock courteously. It only shows up when you are at your weakest, hefty and uncompromising. That tipping moment for me came when I was 34 weeks pregnant, all by myself, and witnessing the life I had meticulously planned crumble into nothing. I used to plan out every aspect of her future, but you can’t budget or get ready for the father of your pregnant kid to leave the moment you decide to retain the child. An avalanche of stillness and a mound of unrelenting, increasing bills that started to accumulate on my kitchen counter like a countdown clock waiting for my spirit to break were left behind when Lee packed his belongings and disappeared without hesitation.

The last blow came in the form of a cold, heartless phone call from my bank. The man on the other end told me that formal foreclosure proceedings had started on my modest home, and I hesitated before responding. The voice was cold, direct, and upsetting. There was only the final termination of my security, no consolation, and no suggested payment schedule. I didn’t know what else to say, so I put a shaky palm on my big abdomen and said to my unborn daughter that I was doing everything I could. She responded with a powerful, rhythmic kick to my ribs, a visceral reminder that giving up was just not an option.

The next afternoon, there was an intolerable heat wave that made every breath feel twice as heavy due to the stifling humidity. I saw Mrs. Higgins, my 82-year-old neighbor, via the window of my living room. She was a quiet, incredibly compassionate woman who typically sat calmly on her front porch during the day. However, she was out in her yard on this sweltering afternoon, clearly shaking and struggling to drive a heavy, antiquated lawnmower through thick, overgrown grass while gasping for oxygen.

At first, I was hesitant. My back hurt from the pregnancy, my body was completely worn out, and I was completely overwhelmed by the fact that I would soon be homeless. However, I had a sudden, strong want to go outdoors and assist her. My remaining energy was completely depleted by the physical exertion. The tremendous heat made me feel dangerously weak and dizzy, and every step I took through the dense weeds sent a wave of anguish through my body. But because finishing that lawn felt like the only thing in my hectic life that I could truly control, I continued to press forward and force my legs to work.

After I finished the chore, Mrs. Higgins gave me a glass of ice-cold lemonade and gently led me to her porch. Suddenly, as we sat in the shade together, she gave me a glance that was much more intense than casual conversation between neighbors. “Who is in your corner?” she asked me directly. I turned aside, unable to hide the unvarnished reality any longer, and muttered that there was no one remaining. Mrs. Higgins didn’t give me a pitying glance. Rather, there was a deep, old comprehension in her gaze. She gave me a firm squeeze on my hand before I made my way back to my own home, reminding me that I was a wonderful girl and begging me to never allow the cruelty of the world to take that goodness away from my heart. That night, when I fell asleep, the oppressive weight in my chest felt a little lighter for the first time in months.

However, the startling, disorganized burst of emergency sirens marked the start of the following morning. Fearing that my little world had finally fallen apart completely, I hurried to my front door. A local sheriff stood on my porch with a grave, composed, and serious demeanor. He broke the devastating news that Mrs. Higgins had died quietly throughout the night while she slept. The cop dipped into his pocket and said that she had left something special for me as I stood there attempting to comprehend the abrupt death of the only person who had truly shown me warmth in weeks.

I took the manila envelope and went to my mailbox to open it in privacy, my hands trembling and my chest constricting. An authentic, stamped document from my mortgage lender was found within. The words PAID IN FULL were boldly and clearly stamped over the top. I collapsed onto the ground, gasping for air as my knees gave out beneath me.

The bank documents were accompanied with a meticulously handwritten letter from Mrs. Higgins outlining everything. She explained that weeks earlier, she had unintentionally seen the bright orange foreclosure notice pinned on my front door from her porch. She had discreetly paid off my home loan in full by going to her neighborhood bank office and liquidating her lifetime personal savings account. I started crying uncontrollably because of the reason she wrote. She commented that at a moment when I obviously had nothing left to give to the world, I had decided to show her genuine, selfless kindness. She made it clear that I owed her nothing, and all she asked was that I learn to treat myself and my child with the same kindness that I had shown her on that hot afternoon.

In addition to helping me complete a task, she had practically saved my life by guaranteeing that my daughter would have a safe place to live. The man who had deserted us, Lee, called me later that night. I didn’t feel the need to beg, cry, or even respond for the first time in my life. The silence that ensued when I let the phone ring out into the room felt completely serene. I learned firsthand that genuine kindness comes from a desire to give of yourself even when you think you have nothing left, not from having an abundance of worldly goods. I mistakenly believed that I was giving up my last remaining energy to save an elderly woman, but in actuality, she was saving me in ways that I am just now starting to fully comprehend.
