The Graduate was anything but a guaranteed hit before it emerged as one of the most talked-about movies of its era. It lacked confidence and assurance. Mike Nichols, who recognized that being cautious seldom results in anything noteworthy, was at the heart of that risk. The expectations of the film industry were already set.
