My Sister Kept Walking Around My Husband in Just a Towel and Called It a ‘Test’ – Then One Day, He Did Something That Made Her Turn Bright Red

The morning it finally blew up, nobody was shouting.

That was what made it worse.

Nobody slammed a door.

Nobody threw anything.

Nobody raised their voice.

But everything felt like it might crack.

My sister was standing in my kitchen wearing nothing but a towel, my husband was quietly moving from one room to another, and I was stuck somewhere between protecting my marriage and protecting a woman whose heart had just been broken.

Kayla had been staying with us for six weeks.

It was supposed to be temporary.

That word had become almost meaningless in our house.

Temporary.

It had started after her breakup.

She’d called me crying one night and asked if she could stay with us “for a little while.”

I said yes before she even finished the sentence.

She was my sister.

She was hurting.

And at the time, I couldn’t imagine telling her no.

Andrew agreed.

He always did that when it came to my family.

“Of course she can stay.”

So Kayla moved into the spare room with two suitcases and a broken heart.

The first week was easy.

She cried.

We listened.

We ordered takeout.

We watched movies.

Andrew gave her space.

I made sure she ate.

Then the second week came.

Then the third.

The fourth.

And slowly, something changed.

Kayla started spending more time in the kitchen when Andrew was there.

She started asking him questions she could have asked me.

She started laughing harder at his jokes.

She started walking around the house in clothes that made me uncomfortable.

At first, I told myself I was imagining it.

Then came the towel.

The first time, Kayla walked through the kitchen after a shower wearing nothing but a towel wrapped around her.

Andrew was sitting at the counter drinking coffee.

He immediately looked away.

I noticed.

Kayla noticed too.

She smiled.

“Morning.”

Andrew nodded.

“Morning.”

She walked away.

I waited until she was gone.

“Did you see that?”

Andrew looked at me.

“Yes.”

“Did that feel normal to you?”

“No.”

“Okay.”

He reached for my hand.

“I’m not interested in her.”

“I know.”

But knowing and feeling comfortable weren’t always the same thing.

The second time, Kayla did it again.

Then again.

And one morning, she stopped beside Andrew while he was making coffee.

“Do you think this looks okay?”

Andrew stared at the counter.

“You should probably ask your sister.”

Kayla laughed.

“She’s going to say I look ridiculous.”

“Then ask her.”

I walked into the kitchen.

Kayla looked at me.

Andrew looked relieved.

That was when I finally confronted her.

“Kayla, can you stop doing that?”

She blinked.

“Doing what?”

“You know exactly what.”

She crossed her arms.

“I just got out of the shower.”

“Wearing a towel through the kitchen is one thing. Doing it every time Andrew is here is another.”

Her expression hardened.

“Are you accusing me of something?”

“I’m asking you to respect my boundaries.”

She laughed.

“Your boundaries?”

“Yes.”

“You think I’m trying to steal your husband?”

“I didn’t say that.”

“You didn’t have to.”

She walked away.

Andrew stayed silent.

Later that night, he told me something that made my stomach drop.

“I’ve been looking at apartments.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“Not for me.”

He sighed.

“For Kayla.”

I didn’t know what to say.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I knew you’d feel guilty.”

“I do feel guilty.”

“I know.”

He took my hand.

“But this isn’t helping her anymore.”

I looked toward the hallway.

“She’s my sister.”

“I know.”

“She’s hurting.”

“I know.”

“Then why does this feel like we’re abandoning her?”

“Because helping someone and letting them ignore every boundary aren’t the same thing.”

I hated that he was right.

Still, I didn’t know how to make Kayla understand.

Then came the morning everything finally exploded.

Nobody was shouting.

Kayla walked into the kitchen wearing a towel again.

Andrew was already there.

He was drinking coffee.

He didn’t look at her.

He didn’t say anything.

Kayla smiled.

“Morning.”

Andrew nodded.

“Morning.”

She opened the refrigerator.

Then leaned against the counter.

“You’re quiet.”

Andrew didn’t respond.

I walked into the kitchen.

Kayla looked at me.

“Good morning.”

I nodded.

“Morning.”

She smiled.

Then Andrew put his coffee down.

He reached into his pocket.

Pulled out his phone.

Unlocked it.

And slid it across the counter.

Nobody spoke.

Kayla looked at the phone.

Then at Andrew.

“What is this?”

He said nothing.

She picked it up.

The screen showed several apartment listings.

One-bedroom apartments.

Two-bedroom apartments.

Places nearby.

Prices.

Addresses.

Available dates.

Kayla’s face changed.

“You’ve been looking for apartments?”

Andrew nodded.

“For you.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You want me gone.”

“No.”

“Then why?”

“Because you need your own space.”

She looked at me.

“Did you know about this?”

I nodded slowly.

“A little.”

Her voice cracked.

“So you both have been planning this behind my back?”

“No,” I said.

“We’ve been trying to figure out how to help you.”

She laughed bitterly.

“By getting rid of me?”

Andrew shook his head.

“By giving you somewhere to heal without turning our home into a place where everyone feels uncomfortable.”

Kayla looked down.

For the first time, she seemed to understand what we’d been trying to say.

But then she whispered:

“I was testing you.”

I stared at her.

“What?”

She wiped her eyes.

“I wasn’t trying to take Andrew.”

Andrew looked at her.

“Then what were you doing?”

She swallowed.

“I needed to know if he would respond.”

I frowned.

“Respond to what?”

“To me.”

She looked embarrassed.

“I needed proof.”

“Proof of what?”

She looked down at her hands.

“That my relationship wasn’t the only relationship that could fall apart.”

The kitchen went silent.

Kayla continued.

“My ex cheated on me.”

I knew that.

But I’d never understood what it had done to her.

“I keep thinking that maybe I’m the problem.”

She wiped her cheek.

“Maybe I’m not lovable.”

I stepped closer.

“Kayla.”

She shook her head.

“So I thought if I could make Andrew notice me…”

She looked at him.

“And he did.”

Andrew frowned.

“I didn’t.”

“You did.”

“No.”

“You noticed me.”

“Yes,” he said calmly. “Because you were making me uncomfortable.”

Kayla looked away.

He continued.

“That’s not the same thing as wanting you.”

She started crying.

“I know.”

And somehow, that was the first honest thing she’d said all morning.

She wasn’t trying to steal my husband.

She was trying to prove something to herself.

She wanted to know whether every relationship was secretly fragile.

She wanted to know whether love always ended with someone choosing somebody else.

And she’d chosen the wrong house to run that experiment in.

I sat beside her.

“You could have told me.”

“I was embarrassed.”

“You didn’t have to be.”

“I didn’t want you to think I was pathetic.”

I took her hand.

“I don’t think you’re pathetic.”

Andrew quietly pushed the phone back toward her.

“These aren’t punishment.”

Kayla looked at him.

“They’re options.”

He pointed at the listings.

“You need somewhere that is yours.”

She stared at the screen.

For a long time, nobody spoke.

Then she asked:

“How long do I have?”

Andrew answered
