My MIL Always ‘Accidentally’ Called Me by Another Woman’s Name – Then My FIL Said, ‘She Still Doesn’t Know?’

For months, Natalie had tried to ignore the strange way her mother-in-law, Beverly, sometimes called her **”Elise”** whenever she was angry. At first, Natalie had assumed it was nothing more than an accidental slip of the tongue. Maybe Beverly was tired. Maybe she had confused her with someone else. Maybe there was an old family memory attached to the name that Natalie simply didn’t understand.

But it kept happening.

Not often enough for Natalie to confront her about it every time, but often enough that the name had begun to settle uncomfortably in the back of her mind. Beverly could be perfectly pleasant one moment, then suddenly become irritated during an argument, look directly at Natalie, and say “Elise” as though that were the name she had always known.

Whenever Natalie asked about it, Beverly dismissed it.

She would apologize quickly, blame the mistake on habit, or simply change the subject.

Natalie had eventually stopped asking.

Then one family dinner changed everything.

What had begun as an ordinary evening ended with a question that made Natalie realize something deeply unsettling: **everyone seemed to know who Elise was except her.**

“Then call her now!”

Beverly and Arthur spun toward me.

For a second, neither of them spoke.

I stood in the doorway, still holding the coat I’d gone back inside to retrieve. I had only stepped away from the others for a moment. Colin was outside bringing the car around, and I’d expected to be in the house for less than a minute before joining him.

Instead, I’d walked straight into a conversation I was clearly never supposed to hear.

My heart was pounding.

I’d heard Beverly’s words clearly.

**Call her.**

But the name attached to those words was what made my stomach drop.

Elise.

The same Elise my husband had told me less than half an hour earlier was his mother’s daughter.

The same Elise he’d said had died as a little girl, years before he was born.

The story had come up during dinner almost casually. Colin had been talking about his family, and at some point he’d mentioned that his mother had once had a daughter named Elise. He had explained that she had died when she was very young, long before Colin was born.

Natalie remembered the sadness in his voice when he told her.

She remembered thinking how terrible it must have been for Beverly to lose a child.

She remembered wondering how a family could carry that kind of grief for so many years.

But now she was standing in the kitchen, listening to Beverly talk as if Elise were still alive.

As if she could simply pick up the phone and call her.

Beverly recovered first.

“Natalie, you shouldn’t listen to private conversations.”

I stared at her, almost unable to believe what I was hearing.

“You’re going to criticize me for overhearing you instead of explaining how you’re planning to call someone who’s dead?”

The words came out sharper than I intended, but I couldn’t stop myself.

Beverly’s face tightened immediately.

Her expression changed from surprise to irritation, but underneath that irritation Natalie could see something else.

Fear.

“It’s complicated,” Beverly said quietly.

“No.”

I shook my head.

“No, it isn’t.”

My hands were beginning to tremble.

“Colin told me Elise was your daughter. He told me she died before he was born. Now you’re standing here saying you’re going to call Elise the second I leave.”

Beverly opened her mouth.

“Natalie…”

“So call her.”

The room fell silent.

Natalie could hear the faint hum of the refrigerator and the ticking of the clock on the wall. Only minutes earlier, the house had been filled with the ordinary sounds of a family evening—plates being moved, chairs scraping against the floor, quiet conversation.

Now everything felt frozen.

Beverly shook her head.

“Why not?”

The question seemed to hang between them.

Beverly looked toward Arthur.

Arthur looked down at the floor.

That tiny exchange told Natalie more than either of them had said.

There was something they were hiding.

Something both of them understood.

Something Colin apparently didn’t know—or at least didn’t know the truth about.

“Why not?” Natalie repeated.

Beverly remained silent.

Natalie’s voice became quieter.

“What are you afraid I’ll find out?”

That stopped her.

Beverly’s eyes flickered toward Natalie, and for the first time there was no attempt to dismiss the situation as a misunderstanding.

“Find out what?”

Natalie asked.

Arthur exhaled heavily.

It was the exhausted sigh of someone who had been carrying a secret for far too long.

“Beverly, enough.”

Beverly turned sharply toward him.

“You already caused this.”

Arthur’s expression hardened.

“No. Colin caused this.”

“No,” Beverly snapped. “You caused this.”

Arthur shook his head.

“This family caused this by turning everything uncomfortable into a secret.”

The words seemed to hit Beverly harder than Natalie expected.

For a moment, she simply stared at her husband.

Natalie looked from one to the other.

She felt as though she were standing in the middle of a conversation that had started years before she ever met Colin.

A conversation in which everyone knew the missing pieces except her.

“What don’t I know?”

Neither answered.

Natalie waited.

Her heartbeat seemed impossibly loud in the silence.

“What don’t I know about Elise?”

Still nothing.

“Beverly?”

No response.

“Arthur?”

He looked at her, and there was something almost apologetic in his eyes.

But he still didn’t speak.

Then headlights swept briefly across the kitchen window.

Everyone turned toward the glass.

A car had pulled into the driveway.

A car door slammed outside.

Natalie recognized the sound immediately.

Colin was back.

For one brief second, she wondered whether she should pretend she hadn’t heard anything.

Maybe she could walk outside, get into the car, and wait until they were alone before confronting him.

But then she looked at Beverly.

Her mother-in-law was pale.

Arthur had gone completely still.

Neither of them looked relieved that Colin had returned.

They looked terrified of what would happen next.

A few seconds later, the front door opened.

“Natalie?” Colin called from the hallway. “I thought you were right behind me.”

Natalie swallowed.

She slowly stepped away from the kitchen doorway.

Her mind was racing with questions.

Who was Elise really?

Why had Beverly called her by that name so many times?

Why had Colin told her Elise was dead?

And, most frightening of all, **who had Beverly been planning to call?**

Natalie stepped into the hall.

Colin was standing near the front door, keys still in his hand.

He smiled when he saw her, completely unaware of what had just happened.

Then his eyes moved past her.

He saw his mother.

He saw his father.

And whatever he noticed in their faces made his smile disappear.

“What happened?” he asked.

Natalie looked at him.

For months, she’d convinced herself that the name Elise was nothing.

A mistake.

A strange family habit.

A word that had no connection to her.

Now she wasn’t so sure.

Because the look on Beverly’s face told Natalie one thing with absolute certainty.

**Elise wasn’t simply a name Beverly had accidentally used.**

And whatever truth this family had buried around that name was about to come to the surface.
