Posted on October 6, 2026 By toni No Comments on I found a flash drive in a regular sausage: at first I thought the flash drive had accidentally ended up in the food until I checked its contents.

I washed my hands three times before I even touched the flash drive again. It sat on the table like evidence from a crime I didn’t remember witnessing, small and ordinary-looking but somehow impossible to ignore. Part of me wanted to throw it away, erase the whole thing from my mind, and pretend I had never found it. Maybe that would have been the safest choice. But another part of me needed answers. Who had hidden it there? How had it ended up in my food? And, more unsettlingly, why had someone wanted me to find it?

Curiosity won.

I waited until the house was quiet before connecting the drive to my computer. The folder appeared almost immediately, with a single file inside. Its name was impossible to misunderstand: “OPEN ME.” The words felt less like an invitation and more like a dare. I stared at the screen for several seconds, wondering whether I was making a terrible mistake by clicking it.

The single photo inside was worse than anything I had imagined.

It showed a man standing far too close to the camera, his face filling much of the frame. He was laughing, but there was something deeply unsettling about the expression. It didn’t look spontaneous. It looked deliberate, almost as though he knew exactly who would eventually see the photograph. For a moment, I had the strange sensation that he wasn’t simply looking into the camera—he was looking directly at me, through the screen, years after the picture had been taken.

There was nothing overtly violent in the image. No blood, no weapon, no obvious threat. And yet I couldn’t shake the feeling that the photograph itself was a message. The worst part was not knowing what the message meant. If the person who left the drive wanted to frighten me, they had succeeded. If they wanted me to investigate, I had no idea where to begin.

I searched through the drive again, hoping I had missed another folder, another photograph, a document, or even a clue hidden somewhere in the files. There was nothing. Just that one image. No name. No date. No explanation.

I never found out who the man was, or how the flash drive ended up in my food. I considered throwing it away, but somehow that felt like admitting that whatever had happened was beyond my control. So I kept it, hidden away where I couldn’t see it but couldn’t quite bring myself to destroy it either.

Since that day, ordinary things have never felt entirely ordinary. Every sealed package, every unopened container, every unexpected object carries the faint possibility of another unanswered question. I know how irrational that sounds. But once you’ve discovered something you were never supposed to find, it’s difficult to return to the certainty you had before.

Sometimes I still think about that photograph and wonder whether the man was laughing at something happening behind the camera—or laughing because he knew someone, someday, would be sitting exactly where I was, staring back at him.

And that is the part I have never been able to forget.
