The storm had been raging outside for hours, shaking the windows and sending heavy rain crashing against the roof. Every so often, a powerful gust of wind swept through the neighborhood, making the trees bend and the lights flicker. I had spent most of the evening inside, hoping the weather would calm down before morning. Nothing about the night seemed particularly unusual at first. It was simply one of those storms that made you grateful to be indoors, surrounded by familiar walls and the comforting sounds of home.
But sometime after midnight, something strange happened.
I woke up to an unfamiliar noise coming from the direction of the bathroom. At first, I thought it was just the rainwater rushing through the gutters or a loose pipe vibrating because of the pressure in the plumbing. The sound was faint, almost like a soft scratching or tapping, and it disappeared whenever I tried to listen carefully. I lay in bed for a few moments, hoping it would stop on its own. Then I heard it again.
This time, I was certain the noise was coming from the bathroom.
Curiosity finally got the better of me. I pulled on a robe, switched on the hallway light, and slowly made my way toward the door. The house felt strangely quiet compared with the chaos outside. The storm was still roaring, but inside, every little sound seemed amplified. When I reached the bathroom, I paused for a moment, listening. There was no movement that I could identify, just the occasional drip of water and the distant rumble of thunder.
I pushed the door open and turned on the light.
Everything looked normal.
The sink was dry, the towels were hanging where I had left them, and the shower curtain was still perfectly in place. I almost laughed at myself for getting out of bed over a noise that could easily have been caused by the storm. Then my eyes moved toward the toilet.
And that was when I froze.
Something was inside the bowl.
At first, I couldn’t understand what I was looking at. The bathroom light reflected off the water, creating strange shadows that made the object difficult to identify. I leaned forward slightly, trying to get a better view, but I immediately regretted moving closer. Whatever it was, it definitely hadn’t been there when I had used the bathroom earlier that evening.
My heart began to pound.
For several seconds, I stood completely still, staring at the toilet and trying to convince myself that my eyes were playing tricks on me. The storm outside had already put me on edge, and the combination of darkness, strange noises, and exhaustion made the situation feel even more unsettling. I reached for my phone and turned on its flashlight, directing the beam toward the water.
That was when I realized the object wasn’t something I had accidentally dropped.
It appeared to be alive.
I stumbled backward, nearly knocking into the bathroom door. My first instinct was to leave the room immediately, but I couldn’t stop looking. The thing shifted slightly beneath the surface, creating a series of small ripples that spread across the bowl. I couldn’t tell exactly what it was, and the uncertainty made the entire situation even more frightening.
How could something living have ended up inside my toilet?
My mind immediately began searching for explanations. Perhaps it had somehow entered through the plumbing. Maybe the heavy rain had caused a problem with the drainage system. I had heard stories about strange animals appearing in homes after floods, but those stories always seemed to happen to other people, in other places. I had never imagined I might experience something similar in my own bathroom.
I quickly closed the bathroom door and stepped into the hallway. My hands were shaking, and I could feel my pulse racing in my neck. I considered waking someone else in the house, but part of me worried that I might be overreacting. Before doing anything else, I wanted to understand what I had seen.
I returned to the doorway, keeping a safe distance from the toilet, and shone the flashlight inside once more.
The object moved again.
This time, I could make out a little more of its shape, but not enough to identify it with confidence. The water was cloudy, and the angle made it difficult to see clearly. I realized that trying to investigate it myself might be a bad idea. Whatever had entered the toilet, I didn’t want to risk touching it or allowing it to escape into the bathroom.
I stepped away and called for help.
As I waited, the storm continued to batter the house. Rainwater rushed along the street outside, and distant thunder rolled across the sky. I began to wonder whether the weather had caused a problem somewhere in the drainage system. Heavy rainfall can sometimes overwhelm sewer infrastructure, and flooding may force debris or small animals into places they would not normally reach. Still, I knew I couldn’t assume that was what had happened without knowing exactly what was in the bowl.
When help finally arrived, I explained everything I had heard and seen. At first, my story sounded almost unbelievable, but the moment the bathroom door opened and the flashlight illuminated the toilet, the seriousness of the situation became obvious.
The person helping me stopped in the doorway.
For a moment, neither of us said anything.
Then came the question I had been asking myself since I first switched on the bathroom light: how on earth had it gotten there?
We decided not to reach into the toilet or attempt to remove the unknown object ourselves. If it was an animal, it could bite or scratch. If it had come through a damaged pipe or an overflowing drainage system, there could also be sanitation concerns. The safest approach was to keep the bathroom closed and seek appropriate assistance rather than risk making the situation worse.
As the night wore on, my initial shock gradually gave way to a different feeling: a need to understand what had happened. I wanted to know whether the storm was responsible, whether there was damage to the plumbing, and whether the same thing could happen again. The thought of using the bathroom without knowing what might be lurking inside the pipes suddenly seemed impossible.
The next step was to have the situation inspected properly. A plumber could determine whether the toilet or drainage system had been affected by the storm, while an appropriate animal-control professional could help if the object turned out to be a living creature. Until then, I kept the bathroom off-limits and avoided flushing the toilet, since doing so might have caused further problems.
Looking back, the most frightening part of the experience wasn’t simply what I saw in the toilet. It was the sudden realization that something unexpected had happened inside a place where I normally felt completely safe. Bathrooms are among the most ordinary spaces in a home. We use them every day without giving much thought to the pipes, drains, and hidden systems working behind the walls.
A severe storm can remind us how much of our homes depends on infrastructure we rarely see. Flooding, damaged drainage lines, and plumbing problems can sometimes produce strange and unpleasant surprises. However, the presence of an unfamiliar object in a toilet does not automatically mean that it came through the sewer, and identifying the cause requires careful inspection.
By morning, the storm had finally begun to weaken. The rain slowed to a steady drizzle, and the neighborhood gradually returned to normal. Yet I couldn’t shake the memory of that moment when I had opened the bathroom door, glanced toward the toilet, and realized that something was terribly out of place.
I had gone to investigate a strange noise, expecting to find nothing more than a loose pipe or a dripping faucet. Instead, I had discovered a mystery that left me shaken and searching for answers.
And perhaps the strangest part of all was knowing that, until someone could identify exactly what had been inside the bowl, I still had no idea what the storm had brought into my home.
