Erin was finding it difficult to cope with the oppressive silence that had descended upon her home following the death of her ten-year-old daughter, Lily. Erin followed the dog into a neglected, overgrown field beyond their property as he managed to squeeze through a small opening in the wooden fence. When Lily wandered outside their house in the warmer months, it was the same secret path. Baxter led her over rough terrain to an old shed that was tilted slightly toward the lot’s edge. As though demanding that she enter, he paused at the door and waited. The interior was musty and dark, with the smell of ancient wood filling the air, while faint rays of light trickled down the floor from roof crevices.
Erin found a neatly constructed nest inside one corner made of Lily’s clothes, including a blue hoodie, a purple scarf, and other recognizable items. A calico cat with three small kittens cuddled up together for warmth rested in the middle. The kittens were captivated to the yellow sweater’s softness as soon as Baxter placed it next to them. Erin realized then that Lily had been quietly providing the stray cat with a secure haven long before her death. Erin felt a shaky feeling of relief after learning that her daughter’s generosity had not stopped—it had left something alive and safe in its wake.
