Deaf hiker falls 700 feet, but when rescuers finally find her, she isn’t alone

Amelia Milling never expected her solo adventure in Alaska to become a fight for survival.

Seeking solitude and challenge, she embarked on a multi-day hike through the rugged wilderness. But what began as an exciting journey quickly turned dangerous when she lost her footing on a steep icy slope and plunged hundreds of feet down the mountainside. Bruised, exhausted, and disoriented, Amelia found herself stranded in freezing conditions with no idea how she would make it back to safety.

The isolation made the situation even more frightening. As a deaf hiker, communication options were limited, and help felt impossibly far away. Surrounded by endless snow and towering peaks, she faced the terrifying reality that she might spend the night alone in the wilderness.

Then she noticed movement in the distance.

At first, the white animal approaching through the snow looked like a wolf. As it came closer, however, Amelia realized it was a husky wearing a collar. The dog’s name was Nanook, a well-known local trail companion with a reputation for helping lost hikers.

Rather than wandering off, Nanook stayed by Amelia’s side. The husky guided her toward safer ground, remained with her throughout the freezing night, and provided companionship when she needed it most. His presence became a source of comfort and reassurance in an otherwise desperate situation.

The most dramatic moment came when Amelia attempted to cross a powerful river. Swept off her feet by the current, she was pulled underwater and struggled to stay afloat. Nanook immediately jumped into action, grabbing onto her backpack and helping her reach safety before the situation became fatal.

Eventually, Amelia activated her emergency beacon, allowing rescue teams to locate her position. When the helicopter arrived, rescuers found her alive—and Nanook still faithfully guarding her side.

Although modern technology played a role in the rescue, Amelia believes the husky was the true reason she survived. Without his guidance, protection, and remarkable instinct, she may never have made it through the ordeal. Her experience remains a powerful reminder that courage and loyalty can sometimes arrive in the most unexpected form—on four legs, covered in fur, and ready to help when it matters most.
