Brielle and Cordelia were on either side of Tyler as he arrived at the government building the following morning. The same nonchalant, mocking confidence that they had used against me during my whole marriage was carried by all three of them. They thought I was there to plead for money. The mood in the government office became electrifying. The Harrisons looked at me without their heavy cloak of classist presumption for the first time in our relationship. The change was nearly laughable. In an instant, Cordelia softened her stiff posture, trying to smile pleasantly and talk frantically about the importance of family and finding a solution. Tyler’s face turned a ghostly white as he started stammering apologies and pleading with us to go outside so we could have a quiet conversation and mend our marriage. However, what systemic disrespect has already irreversibly ruined is rarely healed by false apologies given only after an abrupt change in financial circumstances.
I turned to face the three of them and calmly told them that I had never desired a single penny of their inheritance or a shred of their social acceptance. I clarified that the only reasons I had stayed in the marriage for so long were real optimism and a strong feeling of devotion, both of which had been gradually eroded over time by their unrelenting brutality. In our home, wealth had never been a problem. It was their lack of character.
I signed the final divorce decree without a trace of resentment or reluctance.
