My Husband Brought His PlayStation to the Delivery Room While I Was in Labor – What the Nurses Did Next Made Sure He Never Forgot That Day

A few hours later, labor became significantly more difficult.

The contractions were stronger now, arriving with almost no time in between. Every wave of pain seemed more intense than the last, forcing me to focus all my energy on breathing through it. Physically, I was exhausted. Emotionally, I felt even worse.

What hurt most wasn’t the labor itself.

It was the loneliness.

The man who was supposed to be my biggest source of support sat only a few feet away, yet he felt impossibly distant. Every time I glanced toward him, the glow of the television reflected across his face while his fingers moved rapidly across the controller. The sounds of explosions, voices, and game notifications filled the room where our daughter was about to be born.

Meanwhile, I was fighting through the hardest experience of my life.

Several nurses came and went throughout the afternoon. Some offered encouraging smiles. Others looked openly frustrated by Neal’s behavior. A few even tried engaging him in conversation, hoping to draw his attention back to what was happening.

Nothing worked.

Whenever someone spoke to him, he responded with brief answers before turning his focus back to the screen.

As the hours passed, my disappointment slowly transformed into something heavier.

Resentment.

For years, I had defended Neal whenever friends or family questioned his maturity. I told people he had a playful personality. I insisted he would become more responsible when the time came. I convinced myself that marriage and fatherhood would naturally encourage him to grow.

Sitting in that hospital bed, I began wondering if I had been lying to myself.

Around four in the afternoon, another powerful contraction hit. The pain was so intense that I doubled over and cried out despite my efforts to remain calm. Instantly, two nurses rushed to my side.

Neal barely looked up.

One of the nurses checked my monitors while another adjusted my position.

“You’re doing great,” Maribel said gently.

I nodded weakly.

Then another contraction arrived.

This one felt even worse.

Without thinking, I reached toward the side of the bed again, searching for a hand to hold.

The space beside me was empty.

Neal had moved his chair closer to the television.

Something inside me cracked.

Not dramatically.

Not loudly.

Just enough.

Enough to realize I could no longer pretend this behavior was normal.

Enough to realize that becoming parents wasn’t magically going to fix problems that already existed.

Enough to understand that if he couldn’t show up for me during this moment, I had no idea when he ever would.

Maribel noticed the tears rolling silently down my face.

She gently squeezed my shoulder.

“You’re stronger than you think,” she whispered.

At that moment, her kindness meant more to me than she probably realized.

As evening approached, the room grew busier. Doctors began checking my progress more frequently. Medical staff prepared equipment and discussed the next stages of labor. The atmosphere shifted from waiting to action.

Everyone understood that the birth was getting closer.

Everyone except Neal.

He remained completely absorbed in his game.

Until suddenly, the doctor entered the room, reviewed my chart, examined me, and announced words that immediately changed everything.

“It’s time.”

For the first time all day, Neal looked away from the television.

The game controller slowly lowered into his lap.

Reality had finally arrived.

And in the next few moments, everyone in the room would discover whether he was truly ready to become a father—or whether he was about to learn a lesson he would never forget.
