Ways BFF relationships have changed from the ’70s versus today

Posted on November 16, 2025 By Aga Co No Comments on Ways BFF relationships have changed from the ’70s versus today

There’s something undeniably nostalgic and comforting about looking back at the ’70s and ’80s — a period when life seemed slower, friendships felt deeper, and moments weren’t filtered through screens. Many of us remember riding our bikes until sunset, hearing a parent call from the porch, and feeling like the world was both vast and familiar at the same time.

Back then, we didn’t have smartphones buzzing constantly, yet we somehow stayed connected to the people and things that mattered most. Those decades weren’t perfect, but they carried a simplicity and authenticity that many today long for.

Relationships — whether romantic or platonic — reflected that slower pace. People showed up in person, spoke face-to-face, and built bonds through shared routines instead of digital habits. Looking back, it’s clear how differently we experienced connection before the digital age took over.

1. Communication Styles
In the ’70s, staying in touch meant being present. Conversations happened face-to-face or over the landline, and handwritten letters bridged long distances. Rotary phones gradually gave way to touch-tone models, and each call carried weight and significance.

Long-distance calls were costly, so families often waited until nighttime, when rates were cheaper. Words mattered — every minute of conversation was intentional.

Today, we can reach anyone instantly through texts, DMs, or video calls. While communication has become effortless, many feel more disconnected than ever. Digital messages lack tone and nuance, making misunderstandings more common without the clarity of in-person conversation.

2. Dating Norms and Practices
Dating in the ’70s required confidence. If you liked someone, you approached them in person. People met potential partners through friends, at work, or in local hangouts. Sharing a phone number was a meaningful step, not just a simple tap on a screen.

Modern dating revolves around apps like Tinder and Bumble. It’s easier to meet people, but building trust can feel harder. Relationships used to begin with conversation and connection; now, they often start with curated profiles and quick swipes.
