Last Friday, a devastating traffic accident shook not only a family but also the football world, particularly Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense. Coach Mano Menezes will miss the match against São Paulo in the Brasileirão after being granted leave to return to Porto Alegre to be with his loved ones, following the tragic loss of two family members.

The Accident
The crash occurred on BR-293 in Santana do Livramento, claiming the lives of 16-year-old Maria Sophia Dumoncel and her 9-year-old brother, Arthur Dumoncel. A 42-year-old man, whose identity has not been disclosed, also died at the scene. According to the Federal Highway Police (PRF), the siblings died instantly from the impact. The third victim was transported to the hospital but, sadly, did not survive his injuries.

The Injured
Two other individuals remain in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU): a 29-year-old driver and a 23-year-old passenger, both from Dom Pedrito. They are receiving intensive medical treatment. The tragedy has deeply affected the local community, which is rallying together to support the grieving families.

Grêmio in Mourning
In this time of deep sorrow, Grêmio issued an official statement expressing heartfelt condolences to Coach Mano Menezes, his wife Maria Inês, his daughter Camilla Menezes, and his son-in-law Álvaro Dumoncel. The club also extended its sympathy to the children’s mother, Mirela Gomez da Costa. The statement reflected a sense of unity and support at a moment when it is most needed.

Wake and Burial
The wake for Maria Sophia and Arthur will be held at the Dom Pedrito Municipal Chapel, with burial set for Sunday (18) at the Santa Rita Cemetery in Santa Maria. This information was shared by Camila Menezes, Mano’s daughter, on social media—her words revealing the raw pain of the loss.

Fan Solidarity
This tragedy has touched not only the Menezes family but also Grêmio supporters and the wider football community. Many fans have taken to social media to share messages of sympathy and solidarity. A space often filled with rivalry and competition has transformed into one of compassion and unity.

The Match and the Coaching Staff
In Mano Menezes’ absence, assistant coach Sidnei Lobo will lead the team against São Paulo. Assistant coach James Freitas is also traveling to join the technical staff in São Paulo. This sudden change is a reminder of how unpredictable life—and football—can be, demanding quick adaptation to unforeseen challenges.

Final Reflection
Moments like this highlight the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing the people we love. The grief the Menezes family is enduring is unimaginable, but the outpouring of support shows the strength of human compassion. May we all take a moment to value our relationships and remember that, in the end, what truly matters are the bonds we share with those we love.
