At least 12 people have been killed and nearly 30 others injured in a horrifying shooting rampage at Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach on Sunday night, an incident that authorities have since officially classified as a terrorist attack. The shocking violence has left the nation reeling and raised serious concerns about public safety.

Gunfire broke out at approximately 6:45pm along Campbell Parade, triggering immediate panic as beachgoers and nearby diners fled for their lives. The shots were fired during a well-attended Jewish celebration taking place by the ocean, according to reports from the Guardian. What had been a peaceful evening quickly descended into chaos as the sound of gunfire echoed across the crowded beachfront.

Emergency services rushed to the scene within minutes, where police identified two armed suspects. One of the gunmen was shot dead at the scene by authorities, while the second was arrested and taken into custody. Officials later confirmed that the surviving suspect remains in critical condition.

A rapidly escalating and dangerous scene
The already chaotic situation took an even more alarming turn when authorities discovered what they believe to be an improvised explosive device (IED) near the attack site. Specialist bomb squad units were immediately deployed and began working to secure and assess the device, further heightening fears among the public.

As of Sunday night, police warned that the number of casualties could still change as investigations continued and more information became available. Members of the public were strongly urged to stay away from the area, according to BBC News, while officers worked to secure the scene.

In a series of social media updates, police described the shooting as a “developing incident” and instructed residents and bystanders to remain hidden and seek shelter.

“Anyone at the scene should take shelter. Police are on scene and more information will be provided when it comes to hand,” authorities stated.
“We are still asking people in the area to take shelter until we can determine what is happening.”

Heroic bystander intervenes
Amid the terror, a moment of extraordinary bravery emerged. A video circulating online appears to show a bystander courageously disarming one of the shooters. In the footage, as the gunman fires into a crowd, a man wearing a white shirt can be seen approaching from behind and grabbing hold of him.

The bystander successfully wrestles the weapon away and then points it at the shooter, who immediately flees the scene. The attacker runs toward the direction of the second shooter, who was still firing at innocent people gathered on the beach to celebrate.

The clip has since gone viral, with many describing the man’s actions as heroic and crediting him with potentially saving lives.

Massive emergency response
As chaos unfolded, authorities launched a large-scale emergency response involving more than 25 units, including ambulances, helicopters, and special operations teams. NSW Ambulance later confirmed that at least 29 people were injured, among them two police officers who were hurt while responding to the attack.

Several victims were transported to hospitals across Sydney. Six people were taken to St Vincent’s Hospital, three to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, and two others to St George Hospital, where medical teams worked urgently to treat their injuries.

Disturbing footage from the grassy areas near the beach showed injured victims lying on the ground as paramedics desperately attempted to stabilise them. Scenes of blood-stained clothing, improvised bandages, and people running in fear painted a deeply distressing picture of the night’s events.

Motive still unclear
At this stage, the motive behind the attack remains unknown. However, authorities have confirmed that a “Chanukah by the Sea” event had begun nearby shortly after 5:00pm. It has not yet been determined whether the celebration was directly linked to the shooting, and investigations are ongoing.

Witnesses recount panic and confusion
Witnesses described scenes of fear, confusion, and disbelief. Elizabeth Mealey, a Randwick local and former journalist, said she was inside the popular Icebergs restaurant when the gunshots shattered the calm evening atmosphere.

“At first we thought it was fireworks, but it wasn’t. It was something much worse,” she told ABC News.
“People started running right up the beach. It was panic, and that panic spread to Icebergs. People were standing around not knowing what was happening, and that’s what made it so frightening.”
