Fox News Anchor Hospitalized Following Sudden Shivering Episode Live on Air

Fox News anchor John Roberts, 68, is currently hospitalized after being diagnosed with a severe case of malaria, a rare but serious illness that left him physically weakened and in intense pain. The veteran journalist revealed that his first alarming symptoms appeared live on air earlier this week, when he suddenly began shivering uncontrollably during a broadcast segment.

Speaking to People, Roberts described the experience as unlike anything he had endured before. “My whole body hurt—from head to toe,” he said, adding that the intensity of the illness quickly became frightening. Subsequent blood tests showed dangerously low platelet and white blood cell counts, prompting further examinations. Ultimately, doctors confirmed that he was suffering from malaria—a diagnosis Roberts admitted left him “a little scared.”

Malaria, caused by a parasitic infection transmitted through mosquito bites, is uncommon in the United States but remains prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions. According to the Mayo Clinic, it can be life-threatening if untreated, with common symptoms including high fever, chills, fatigue, and body aches. Each year, approximately 290 million people worldwide contract malaria, resulting in over 400,000 deaths, primarily among vulnerable populations.

Roberts said his case surprised even his medical team. “One of my doctors said I’m the first case he’s ever seen,” he posted on X, highlighting how rare malaria is in the U.S. He also noted that the severity of his illness was difficult to categorize. “There isn’t really a category for how bad this is,” he explained. “But I can say without hesitation, I’ve never felt that sick in my life.”

The anchor had recently returned from a two-week trip to Indonesia in late July. Roughly ten days after returning home, he noticed symptoms—initially mild but quickly escalating into debilitating chills and full-body pain. The Daily Beast reported that only after his condition worsened did he seek medical attention, leading to hospitalization and the eventual malaria diagnosis.

Roberts is now receiving treatment with intravenous artesunate, the primary therapy for severe malaria cases. Derived from the sweet wormwood plant, artesunate is a powerful antimalarial medication that has saved countless lives worldwide. Although recovery may take time, Roberts expressed optimism about his prognosis, telling reporters he hopes to return to work as early as next week.

A Distinguished Career in Journalism

John Roberts has been a familiar face in American news for decades. Born in Toronto, Canada, in 1956, he began his career as a local radio and TV reporter before moving to national network roles. He later joined CBS News as White House Correspondent, covering major political developments and international events. Roberts also co-anchored morning and weekend programs at CNN before joining Fox News in 2011.

At Fox, he quickly became one of the network’s most prominent political reporters. In 2017, he was named Chief White House Correspondent, placing him at the center of national headlines during the Trump administration. Known for his calm demeanor and precise reporting, Roberts has earned a reputation as one of the most trusted and experienced voices in broadcast journalism.

Currently, he co-anchors America Reports alongside Sandra Smith, covering political, social, and breaking news stories. His sudden hospitalization has generated concern among colleagues, viewers, and the journalism community, many of whom have expressed their support publicly.

Family and Resilience

Outside of work, Roberts is married to journalist and broadcaster Kyra Phillips, with whom he has two children. Friends describe him as a devoted father and husband, balancing the demands of news reporting with strong family commitment.

Despite the challenging week, Roberts expressed gratitude—for the medical team caring for him, for his family’s support, and for the overwhelming encouragement from viewers. “It’s been humbling to see how many people care,” he said.

The Bigger Picture

Roberts’s illness underscores that while malaria is rare in the U.S., it remains a serious global health concern. Travelers to certain regions face inherent risks, and experts advise preventive measures such as antimalarial medication, mosquito repellents, and protective clothing.

His experience also highlights the importance of recognizing early warning signs. Shivering, fever, and body aches may appear minor at first but, as in Roberts’s case, can indicate a serious condition. Prompt medical attention likely prevented a more dangerous outcome.

Looking Ahead

Roberts has emphasized his eagerness to recover and return to Fox News. His team continues to cover stories in his absence, while viewers express how much they miss his steady on-screen presence.

“I’m focused on getting better and being back with Sandra and the team as soon as possible,” he said, remaining hopeful despite the seriousness of his illness.

For a journalist who has spent his career reporting the news, Roberts’s own health crisis has now become headline news. While his recovery is ongoing, his resilience, professionalism, and dedication continue to inspire colleagues and viewers alike.
