Dick Cheney, one of the most powerful and controversial figures in American politics, has passed away at the age of 84, as confirmed by his family in a statement. Cheney, who served as the 46th Vice President of the United States under President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2009, remains one of the most influential vice presidents in modern American history. He played a key role as the architect of the U.S. “War on Terror,” a major aspect of American foreign policy following the tragic events of September 11, 2001.

During his time in office, Cheney became known for his direct and assertive approach to leadership, with an influence that reached far beyond U.S. politics, affecting international relations and national security strategies. As the principal figure behind the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, he became a symbol of strength and determination in the global fight against terrorism. However, his influence was also a source of intense debate, with many critics scrutinizing his strong positions and the use of executive power to expand surveillance and military operations worldwide, including the use of torture on war detainees as part of anti-terrorism tactics.

According to a statement from his family, Cheney passed away due to complications related to pneumonia and cardiovascular disease. Throughout much of his adult life, he battled ongoing health problems linked to his heart and circulatory system. He suffered several heart attacks over the years, and in 2012, he underwent a heart transplant—an operation he described as “the gift of life itself.” Despite these significant challenges, Cheney lived much longer than many had expected, continuing to contribute to American public life and policy.

In the final days of his life, Cheney was surrounded by those he loved most: his beloved wife of 61 years, Lynne, their daughters Liz and Mary, and other family members, who were with him at the time of his passing. His family described him as a great and good man, emphasizing the lessons and values he instilled in them and his descendants. In the statement released after his death, they highlighted that Cheney had taught his children and grandchildren to love their country and live lives of courage, honor, kindness, and passion—especially for fly fishing.

“Cheney was a great and honorable man who gave his children and grandchildren unforgettable lessons on loving our country, living with integrity, and the values that shape the character of a strong and kind person,” the statement read. The family also expressed their deep gratitude for everything Cheney did for the nation, noting that they were blessed to have loved and been loved by such a “noble giant of a man.” They expressed their profound thanks for the life he lived and the impact he made on American politics and on the lives of everyone who knew him.

While some may have differing opinions about the policies he promoted, there is no denying the deep impact he had in shaping American politics during the decade he spent in the Bush administration. In an era when decisions regarding wars, national security, and global surveillance took on heightened importance, Cheney was one of the chief architects of policies that influenced many aspects of political and social life.

In the end, after a life marked by major decisions and extraordinary personal challenges, he became a figure who will be remembered in the historical memory of the United States, not only for his power and influence but also for the lessons he left behind.

Rest in peace, Dick Cheney.
