A catastrophic traffic collision struck one of central Mexico’s most heavily traveled highways early Wednesday, claiming the lives of at least 19 people and leaving the surrounding communities in mourning. The accident occurred on the Mexico–Querétaro Highway, a vital route linking the capital with central and northern regions of the country, once again highlighting ongoing concerns about highway safety, weather-related risks, and the regulation of heavy transport vehicles.
State authorities reported that the crash took place near kilometer marker 059+000, close to the municipality of Huehuetoca in the State of Mexico. During the mid-morning hours, a large cargo truck traveling toward Mexico City failed to slow as it approached the Jorobas junction—an area already notorious for congestion and complex traffic patterns.
According to investigators, the truck driver was unable to brake in time. The vehicle veered out of control, struck a roadside embankment, and then barreled into several vehicles ahead that were either slowing down or stopped. At least five passenger cars and one pickup truck were directly impacted. The collision caused the trailer to jackknife across the roadway, completely blocking all northbound lanes and instantly turning the highway into a scene of destruction.
Emergency crews arriving at the site encountered chaos and devastation. Mangled vehicles, broken glass, and debris were scattered across the pavement. Some cars were crushed or pushed far from their original positions, complicating rescue efforts. Firefighters, paramedics, and police worked urgently to stabilize the scene, free trapped victims, and prevent additional accidents as traffic quickly backed up for kilometers in both directions.
Authorities later confirmed that 19 people died as a result of the crash. Several victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while others died after being taken to nearby hospitals. As standard procedure in major incidents, toxicology tests will also be conducted.
Traffic on the Mexico–Querétaro Highway was partially closed for several hours as crews removed wreckage and cleared debris. The shutdown caused severe delays, forcing thousands of commuters and freight drivers to reroute. By late afternoon, limited traffic flow was restored, though authorities warned that congestion would persist well into the evening.
Local residents and regular commuters voiced frustration and anger, noting that serious accidents along this stretch of highway have become increasingly frequent. Many cited the heavy presence of cargo trucks, weak enforcement of speed limits, and aging infrastructure as ongoing dangers. Some called for stricter restrictions on freight traffic during heavy rain, while others demanded long-term investments in road safety improvements.
Government officials acknowledged these concerns and promised a comprehensive review. A spokesperson for the State of Mexico transportation department said the tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to strengthen safety measures on major highways that carry large volumes of commercial traffic. “This is not an isolated event,” the official said. “It is a warning.”
Hospitals in nearby areas were placed on temporary alert to ensure adequate staffing and supplies for incoming patients. Mental health support services were also made available to survivors and families affected by the disaster. Authorities urged witnesses or anyone involved to come forward, noting that firsthand accounts could be critical in reconstructing the sequence of events.
