State of Mexico.– On Wednesday, November 20, a serious multiple-vehicle collision took place on the Mexico–Querétaro Highway, at kilometer marker 059+000 in the municipality of Huehuetoca, State of Mexico. The accident involved a large trailer that, after failing to stop in time, slammed into several vehicles. The force of the crash left the trailer sprawled across the road, completely blocking all three north–south lanes. This caused major disruption and a partial closure of the highway, quickly leading to significant traffic congestion in the area.
Causes of the accident and traffic conditions
According to preliminary reports, the incident happened as the trailer was heading toward Mexico City. Approaching the Jorobas intersection, the driver was unable to brake in time and first struck a roadside bank before colliding with a total of five passenger vehicles and a pickup truck. The impact caused considerable damage to the vehicles involved and created a chain-reaction effect that worsened the severity of the collision.
Authorities pointed out that weather may have contributed to the accident. Rainfall throughout the day had left the road surface slick and dangerous, making braking distances longer than usual. While the official investigation will determine the exact cause, it is strongly suspected that the wet pavement, combined with the trailer’s momentum, played a significant role in the driver’s inability to stop in time. Traffic officers at the scene also reminded motorists that heavy trailers require much longer braking distances, especially under adverse weather conditions.
Injuries and safety recommendations
Emergency personnel and paramedics quickly arrived to provide assistance to those involved. Fortunately, the injuries reported were minor, with most victims suffering from bruises, small cuts, or shock. Even though no life-threatening injuries were detected, paramedics urged several of the injured passengers to undergo medical evaluation at nearby hospitals as a precautionary measure. They stressed that sometimes trauma or internal injuries may not appear immediately and that professional examination is the safest course of action.
As a result of the collision, highway authorities issued a public reminder about the importance of maintaining safe speeds, particularly in rainy or wet conditions. They also encouraged drivers of both passenger cars and heavy vehicles to check their brakes regularly and to keep greater following distances in poor weather. The accident, while not resulting in fatalities, served as a clear warning of how quickly road conditions and a single miscalculation can lead to dangerous multi-vehicle incidents on one of the country’s busiest highways.
