Abused and ignored: A former child star’s journey

Jennette McCurdy was a bright-eyed child whose sparkle could light up any room. By the age of six, she was already appearing on television screens across America.

Yet behind the camera, her childhood was far from happy. She was homeschooled and isolated from peers, and looking at her early photos, it’s hard to imagine that such a small, innocent-looking girl carried so much weight on her shoulders.

Her early years were marked by difficulty. Growing up under a controlling parent and financial struggles, with a serious family health issue adding pressure, Jennette’s life was anything but ordinary. Instead of simply being a kid, she became a young caretaker, bearing her family’s hopes and burdens.

Born on June 26, 1992, in California, Jennette grew up in Garden Grove in a modest household. Her family were members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her mother, who developed compulsive hoarding habits after a cancer diagnosis, filled their home with clutter. The children often had to sleep on Costco gymnastics mats in the living room because their bedrooms were unusable.

Jennette believed the man she grew up with was her biological father. He worked two jobs to support the family. Later, after her mother passed away, she discovered he was not her biological dad.

Her mother was determined for Jennette to become a Hollywood star, seeing it as a path to financial stability. Jennette recalled, “I think [my mother] wanted me to have a better life than she had.” She started acting at eight, debuting on the adult comedy sketch show Mad TV.

By her teens, Jennette had become her family’s main financial support. Fame came with intense pressure, scrutiny, and a sense that nothing she did was enough. Despite her cheerful on-screen persona, she struggled with anxiety, body image issues, and isolation. Milestones like her first period or first kiss were complicated by public attention, while her mother maintained strict control over her life.

Her mother, described as a narcissist, subjected Jennette to emotional, mental, and physical abuse. She pushed her into acting, encouraged disordered eating, and monitored even personal hygiene well into Jennette’s late teens.

A turning point came in 2013. While Jennette’s fans saw a confident performer, she was navigating fame under overbearing parental control. After her mother Debra passed away in 2010, Jennette sought therapy, which became essential in dealing with her struggles, including excessive drinking and unhealthy relationships.

Five years later, Jennette left Hollywood to create her own path. She processed her trauma by writing I’m Glad My Mom Died (2022), a New York Times bestseller. The memoir revealed the invasive control her mother had over her life, including medical exams, restrictions on showering alone, and neglect in situations involving alcohol and modeling as a teenager.

Today, in her 30s, Jennette thrives on her own terms. Through her podcast, she discusses personal growth, mental health, and life outside the spotlight. Fans admire her for her honesty, courage, and the way she transformed hardship into empowerment.

Jennette later learned that the man she believed to be her father was not biological. She met her real father, a jazz musician named Andrew, and they developed a positive relationship. Reflecting on Hollywood, she said, “My whole childhood and adolescence were very exploited… they knew exactly what they were doing.”

In 2025, she began adapting her memoir into a television series, allowing audiences to witness her journey of resilience and self-discovery. From child star to advocate, author, and creator, Jennette McCurdy has rewritten her story, living life on her own terms.
