Macaulay Culkin Faces Backlash for Controversial Halloween Costume of Soldier Meme
Actor Macaulay Culkin, best known for his iconic role as Kevin McCallister in the Home Alone movies, has sparked an online debate after sharing his Halloween costume on social media.
The 46-year-old actor decided to recreate the famous internet meme known as the “Thousand-Yard Stare,” which depicts a soldier with an intense, emotionless expression associated with the psychological exhaustion of war.
For the costume, Culkin wore military-style clothing, an army hat, and dark olive-green face paint. He also recreated the soldier’s distinctive facial expression, seemingly aiming to capture the appearance of the character in the widely recognized image.
However, what appeared to be a humorous Halloween tribute quickly attracted criticism from some social media users.
Several people questioned the appropriateness of the costume, particularly because of the ongoing conflicts around the world. Others initially misunderstood the dark appearance of the makeup, with some suggesting that it resembled blackface.
The controversy quickly divided online audiences.
Some critics argued that dressing as a traumatized soldier was insensitive, especially at a time when millions of people are affected by war and violence. They felt that an image originally associated with the suffering of soldiers should not be treated simply as a Halloween joke.
However, many other users defended Culkin, explaining that his intention was clearly to recreate a recognizable internet meme rather than mock soldiers or any particular group of people.
Supporters also pointed out that the makeup was intended to resemble olive-green military camouflage, not blackface. They argued that the lighting in the photograph may have made the colors appear much darker than they actually were.
The original image behind the meme has a serious historical background. It is associated with American artist Thomas Lea’s 1944 painting, The 2000 Yard Stare, which portrays a Marine whose distant expression reflects the psychological toll of combat during World War II.
Over the years, the painting became widely circulated online as a meme representing exhaustion, disbelief, emotional burnout, and situations that leave someone completely speechless.
Culkin’s Halloween recreation therefore brought together internet humor, military imagery, and a piece of historical art, creating a costume that received very different reactions.
Interestingly, the actor’s caption also attracted attention. He reportedly wrote: “War. War never changes. Happy Halloween y’all,” referencing the famous phrase associated with the Fallout video game franchise.
As the discussion continued, some fans praised his creativity, while others maintained that the costume could have been approached differently.
As of November 2, 2026, Culkin has not publicly addressed the criticism, according to the reports covering the controversy.
The incident once again demonstrates how quickly celebrity Halloween costumes can become major online talking points, particularly when humor, historical imagery, and sensitive subjects intersect.
Whether people saw it as a clever recreation of an internet meme or an inappropriate Halloween choice, Macaulay Culkin certainly managed to get people talking.
