Johnny thought he could talk his way out of anything—until his teacher examined the test beside his. Accused of cheating, he demanded proof and confidently defended two matching answers that seemed innocent. But Mr. Johnson had saved one final question, and Johnny was about to discover that his biggest mistake wasn’t getting history wrong—it was copying another student’s ans…

After a history test, Mr. Johnson called Johnny to his desk with a troubling suspicion. Johnny looked astonished: if his teacher thought he had cheated, he wanted evidence. Mr. Johnson pointed out that Mary, the girl sitting beside him, had named George Washington as the first president—and Johnny had written exactly the same thing. Johnny wasn’t impressed. Everyone knew that answer. Next came the question about who freed the slaves. Both students had answered Abraham Lincoln. Again, Johnny had an explanation ready: he had read his history book the night before.

But Mr. Johnson wasn’t finished. He turned to the question asking who was president during the Louisiana Purchase. This time, Mary hadn’t supplied a historical name for Johnny to defend as common knowledge. Instead, she had simply written, “I don’t know.” And beneath that same question on Johnny’s paper sat the answer that undid his entire defense: “Me neither.”

Johnny’s first two defenses work because identical correct answers are not surprising on a history test. Mr. Johnson asks questions that have recognizable names as their expected responses. Two classmates can reasonably arrive at those names independently. Johnny understands that point and uses it to challenge the accusation, treating each example as though it should end the conversation in his favor.

The teacher allows him to make that argument before introducing the decisive difference. On the final question, the similarity is no longer simply a matter of both students recalling the same fact. Mary’s answer expresses her own uncertainty. Johnny’s response refers to that uncertainty as though he were participating in a conversation with her, rather than answering a question about history on his own paper.

That change is the source of the punchline. The words “Me neither” only make sense in relation to somebody else’s admission of not knowing. They are not the name of a president, and they do not independently explain what Johnny knows. His attempt to borrow an answer has carried over the relationship between two speakers as well as the words on the page.

The story also depends on timing. If the teacher began with that last answer, Johnny would have little room for his confident objections. By moving through the ordinary matches first, the exchange gives him the chance to insist that shared answers prove nothing. The third example then reveals why this particular match is different from the earlier ones.

Johnny’s mistake is therefore more specific than failing to recall a historical name. He copies a response without noticing that its meaning depends on who wrote it and what it answers. Mr. Johnson does not need a longer argument once the final words appear. The joke ends at the moment when the pupil’s own phrasing supplies the evidence he demanded.
