You don’t need a doctor.” So I a taxi to the hospital alone. The doctor was checking me when he suddenly stopped. Then he yelled: “Call the police right now!” I froze. What happened next shocked me.

Chapter 1: The Tide Lines of Betrayal
On the ninth morning of the fire consuming the nerves in my extremities, I emptied the pockets of my wool coat and handed a ride-share driver exactly forty-two dollars. It was every crumpled bill I possessed, surrendered just to carry me to the regional medical center—the very place my fiancé had spent the last two weeks swearing I didn’t need to go.

The physician’s assistant who first examined me was a sturdy, observant woman navigating her early fifties. Her name tag read Margaret. She wore close-cropped silver hair and a pair of reading glasses shoved casually atop her head.

“Squeeze my fingers, please,” she instructed, her voice a calm cadence in the chaotic triage bay.

I tried. I sent the command from my brain to my hand, but my fingers felt like heavy, waterlogged wood. Margaret’s brow furrowed when my right hand refused to close completely. Murmuring to herself, she gently rotated my forearm to check the pulse at my wrist. As she did, the sleeve of my oversized cardigan slid backward.

Margaret stopped speaking mid-syllable.

There, stamped into the tender flesh of my inner arm, was a constellation of five bruises. They were trapped in overlapping stages of decay: angry purples bleeding into sickly greens, the oldest centers yellowing like aged parchment. They formed the unmistakable imprint of a brutal, unyielding grip.

Margaret’s thumb hovered over the freshest, darkest mark. The air in the tiny cubicle seemed to instantly evaporate.

“Who did this?” she asked. The clinical detachment had vanished from her tone.

“My fiancé,” I stammered, the excuse tasting like ash on my tongue. “I’ve been having these dizzy spells. He was just… trying to keep me from falling.”

Margaret didn’t offer a polite nod. She didn’t offer anything. Instead, her sharp gaze dropped lower, focusing intensely on my fingernails. She scrutinized the chalky, striated fault lines running horizontally across every single nail, stark as tide lines left behind on a desolate beach. Her hand remained absolutely frozen over mine.

Slowly, deliberately, she turned her head toward the bustling corridor and projected her voice so it cut through the din of the ER. “I need security at Bay Seven right now. Nobody—absolutely nobody—takes this patient out of my department.”

At that exact moment, the deadened weight in my lap vibrated. My phone screen lit up.

It was a text from Derek.

I see your location on the tracker. Don’t let them give you anything. Mom and I are walking through the doors right now.

My lungs seized. For nine agonizing days, I had been utterly convinced that the most lethal threat in my universe was some mysterious biological malfunction occurring inside my own tissue.

As I stared at the screen, a chilling realization washed over me: I had been entirely wrong.
