How many chickens did you see?

Posted on September 24, 2026 By Aga Co No Comments on How many chickens did you see?

At first glance, this bizarre chicken illusion looks easy. Most people quickly scan from left to right, count the obvious rooster heads, and confidently guess 7 or 8. But that first impression can be misleading. Hidden among the feathers is an entire squad of tiny chicks!

Let’s slow down and perform a careful visual sweep. Start with the large rooster heads forming the main body of the strange, Hydra-like chicken. They overlap along the neck and continue downward, making some easy to miss if you only glance at the image.

Counting from the highest adult head near the top-left and moving downward, there are 9 large rooster heads in total. Their overlapping shapes create the illusion that there are fewer because several heads blend into the surrounding feathers.

Now comes the tricky part. Look closely at the brown feathers and plumage along the creature’s back. Hidden between the larger shapes are tiny yellow baby chicks. They are much smaller and can disappear into the busy pattern if you focus only on the obvious heads.

Carefully scanning from top to bottom reveals 8 baby chicks. They are tucked into different sections of the feathers, which is why many viewers overlook them during their first attempt.

Now let’s add everything together: 9 adult rooster heads plus 8 baby chicks equals 17 chickens altogether. That means the complete count is significantly higher than the quick guesses many people make at first.

The real challenge isn’t simply counting. It’s noticing the smaller details hiding behind the dominant shapes. When an image contains overlapping objects, our eyes naturally focus on the largest and most obvious features first.

So, did you spot all 17 chickens on your first attempt, or did some of the tiny chicks escape your visual radar? Take another look and count them carefully before checking the answer!

Share your final number in the comments, tag someone who loves visual puzzles, and see whether they can beat your score. Would you like another tricky observation puzzle?
