A shocking Google search result falsely claimed that Billy Joel had died, sending fans into confusion and prompting his publicist to immediately step in and set the record straight.
The false information appeared online at a time when the legendary singer has been opening up about a serious health setback that recently forced him to step away from performing.
Joel has now revealed what first made him realize something was wrong, why he eventually sought help from a neurologist, what doctors discovered, and why he initially resisted the treatment they recommended.
According to Newsday, a Google search for Billy Joel incorrectly displayed an informational box claiming that he had **”Died Sept. 17, 2026.”** The claim was completely false.
Joel’s publicist, Claire Mercuri, quickly confirmed that the singer was alive.
“Billy’s not dead,” Mercuri said Thursday afternoon. “I was just emailing with him.”
The bizarre false report appeared just as Joel was beginning to share more details about the medical problems that had affected his balance and ultimately led him to seek neurological care.
In a recent SiriusXM interview, Joel described the strange physical sensations that first made him realize something wasn’t right.
“I noticed that my balance was not good,” Joel explained. “I have this sense of like, being on a boat, like this rocking motion. I wasn’t steady on my feet. I didn’t know why that was.”
For someone who had spent decades performing on stages in front of enormous audiences, suddenly feeling unstable on his feet was deeply concerning.
Joel didn’t know what was causing the sensation.
So he went to a neurologist.
What doctors eventually discovered gave him an explanation for the unusual symptoms he had been experiencing.
## **The Diagnosis Behind Billy Joel’s Health Problems**
Joel revealed that doctors diagnosed him with **normal pressure hydrocephalus, or NPH**, a neurological condition that was once commonly described as “water on the brain.”
“Nobody’s really sure what causes it, but they’re able to diagnose it,” Joel said.
According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, NPH occurs when excess cerebrospinal fluid, known as CSF, builds up in cavities inside the brain called ventricles.
That buildup can cause the ventricles to enlarge and place pressure on surrounding brain tissue.
NPH most commonly affects older adults and can cause several different symptoms.
Problems with walking and balance are among the most common. People with the condition can also experience falls, forgetfulness, confusion, and loss of bladder control.
The condition can be particularly difficult to identify because some of its symptoms can resemble those associated with other neurological disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease.
Doctors may therefore use several different methods to evaluate a patient, including brain imaging, walking assessments, spinal taps, and other neurological tests.
For Joel, receiving the diagnosis meant finally having an explanation for the changes he’d noticed.
But it also meant facing a treatment he wasn’t initially comfortable with.
## **Why Billy Joel Initially Resisted Treatment**
Joel said doctors warned him that the condition could continue to progress.
They recommended a procedure involving the implantation of a shunt in his brain.
The idea immediately frightened him.
Joel explained that the procedure would involve drilling through his skull to place the device, and his first reaction was that he didn’t want to go through with it.
After all, hearing that doctors wanted to place a device inside his brain was not an easy thing to process.
So Joel initially resisted.
He later began researching the treatment and reconsidered his decision.
At the same time, he said it was difficult to determine which of the changes he was experiencing were simply part of getting older and which were actually connected to his medical condition.
That uncertainty made the situation even more complicated.
The false death report therefore arrived at an especially unsettling moment.
While Google briefly told people something that simply wasn’t true, Joel was actually dealing with a very real health challenge—and beginning to speak publicly about what had happened to him.
For fans who saw the alarming search result, the correction from his publicist brought immediate relief.
But Joel’s own account revealed something much more serious beneath the headlines: the performer who spent decades commanding enormous stages had been struggling with balance problems, searching for an explanation, and confronting a diagnosis that changed his life.
And his decision to finally talk about it has given fans a much clearer picture of what was happening behind the scenes.
