Amazing Trick With Vicks VapoRub: A Natural Spider Repellent?

Posted on September 18, 2026 By Aga Co No Comments on Amazing Trick With Vicks VapoRub: A Natural Spider Repellent?

The spiders didn’t just show up.

They took over.

Every corner, every curtain, every quiet moment turned into a jump-scare inside your own home. You could walk into a room you had just cleaned and suddenly notice a web stretching between two pieces of furniture. You could pull open a curtain in the morning and find something moving behind it. Even reaching into a dark corner became an exercise in caution because you never knew what might be waiting there.

At some point, you stopped feeling like the spiders were occasional visitors.

It felt like they lived there.

You tried everything.

Peppermint oil.

Vinegar.

Store-bought sprays.

Chestnuts placed carefully near windows.

More cleaning.

More vacuuming.

Sealing cracks and gaps.

Moving furniture away from the walls.

Every new suggestion came with a little hope that maybe this would finally be the thing that worked.

But nothing seemed to last.

For a day, maybe two, things would look better.

Then another web appeared.

Another spider would crawl across the wall.

Another tiny shadow would move behind a curtain.

It was exhausting.

Living in an old house means accepting a few quirks. You expect creaky floors, strange noises at night, drafty windows, and the occasional mysterious sound from somewhere inside the walls.

But you don’t expect a full-blown spider attraction in every room.

After every natural remedy seemed to fail, the strangest suggestion of all came up.

Vicks VapoRub.

At first, it sounded ridiculous.

Vicks?

The stuff people usually associate with colds, congestion, and being rubbed on your chest when you’re sick?

How could that possibly have anything to do with spiders?

But after trying so many other things, there wasn’t much left to lose except a little patience.

So the experiment began with a mixture of skepticism and hope.

A thin smear was placed along a few window sills, baseboards, and the areas where spiders seemed to appear most often.

Almost immediately, the house smelled different.

The sharp medicinal scent of menthol filled the air.

The eucalyptus added another strong layer to it, while the camphor gave the whole thing that unmistakable smell everyone recognizes.

It smelled less like pest control and more like someone in the house had a terrible cold.

At first, nothing happened.

The spiders didn’t suddenly disappear.

There was no dramatic moment when every web vanished at once.

The house looked exactly the same.

So it was easy to assume the whole idea had been nonsense.

Then the next morning came.

One corner that usually had a fresh web didn’t.

Another window sill remained clear.

The following day, there were still fewer webs.

Then another day passed.

The places that had seemed to attract spiders constantly remained strangely quiet.

The change wasn’t dramatic enough to prove anything.

But it was noticeable.

Maybe the strong scent was discouraging them.

Maybe the menthol and eucalyptus were unpleasant to them.

Maybe they were simply choosing other places to go.

Or maybe the timing was coincidental.

There isn’t strong scientific evidence that Vicks VapoRub is a reliable spider repellent, so the result couldn’t be treated as a guaranteed solution.

Still, something about the experiment seemed to coincide with a change.

And once the house began feeling calmer, we started looking at the problem differently.

Instead of searching for one magical trick, we focused on making the house less attractive to spiders in the first place.

We sealed small gaps around windows and doors.

We checked cracks along the baseboards.

We cleaned the corners that had been ignored for too long.

We moved piles of clutter.

Old boxes were thrown away.

Storage areas were reorganized.

Furniture that had been sitting untouched for months was moved so the spaces behind it could finally be cleaned.

The goal became simple.

Give spiders fewer places to enter.

Give them fewer places to hide.

And, perhaps most importantly, give them fewer reasons to stay.

We also experimented with other gentle scents people commonly use as spider deterrents, including peppermint and cedar.

Again, these aren’t guaranteed solutions, and what works in one house may not work in another.

But combined with regular cleaning and sealing possible entry points, they became another part of the routine.

Slowly, the atmosphere of the house changed.

It wasn’t dramatic.

There wasn’t one morning when we woke up and discovered that every spider had magically disappeared.

Instead, the little victories accumulated.

One less web.

One fewer spider.

One corner staying clean.

One room where you could finally walk in without immediately looking toward the ceiling.

The house slowly shifted from haunted to habitable.

There were still a few eight-legged stragglers.

Every old house has them.

Occasionally, one would still appear in the garage.

Another might show up near a window.

Sometimes we’d discover a web in a place we had completely forgotten to check.

But it was no longer a daily siege.

The constant feeling of being watched by tiny creatures from dark corners finally faded.

And that mattered more than finding a perfect trick.

Because the real solution wasn’t one product.

It was taking back control of the environment.

Cleaning.

Sealing.

Decluttering.

Reducing hiding places.

Paying attention to where the spiders were actually appearing.

And, if you chose to experiment with something like Vicks, understanding that it was more of an anecdotal trick than a scientifically established solution.

Still, standing in the kitchen one morning and realizing there wasn’t a single fresh web in sight felt strangely satisfying.

The same house was still old.

The windows still rattled when the wind picked up.

The floorboards still creaked at night.

The corners were still there.

But they no longer felt like spider territory.

They felt like ours again.

Maybe the Vicks helped.

Maybe the cleaning helped more.

Maybe sealing the gaps made the biggest difference.

Maybe it was all of it together.

Whatever the reason, the house was finally quiet.

No sudden movement behind the curtain.

No web brushing against your arm.

No scanning the ceiling before sitting down.

Just a normal old house again.

And in an old, imperfect home, that small, hard-won peace felt like more than a pest-control experiment.

It felt like taking back ownership of the space.

One window sill.

One baseboard.

One cleaned corner at a time.
