“I am so sorry to interrupt the celebration, everyone, but I have a very important announcement to make regarding tonight’s bill…”

A few guests chuckled.

My fiancé, Grant, frowned.

Loretta’s smile returned.

She actually looked relieved.

She thought I was about to embarrass myself.

Instead, I held up the invoice.

“Apparently, tonight’s celebration cost forty thousand dollars.”

A murmur moved through the ballroom.

Grant laughed.

“Exactly. So stop making a scene and pay it.”

I looked at him.

“Pay it?”

“Yes,” he snapped. “You own three boutiques. Forty thousand dollars shouldn’t mean anything to you.”

His mother nodded enthusiastically.

“I told him you would eventually stop being so dramatic.”

I smiled.

“Of course.”

Loretta relaxed.

Grant raised his glass.

“There. Problem solved.”

“No,” I said.

His smile disappeared.

“The problem has just started.”

I turned toward the banquet manager.

“Could you please explain who authorized the additional charges?”

He hesitated.

Loretta immediately interrupted.

“I did. And I already told you I was handling everything with my future daughter-in-law.”

I looked at her.

“No, Loretta.”

Her expression changed.

“You told me you were handling a fifty-person event with the thirty thousand dollars I transferred to you ten days ago.”

She waved her hand dismissively.

“And I upgraded it because this family deserves a proper celebration.”

“Then why did you tell the hotel I would personally guarantee the additional forty thousand?”

Silence.

Grant’s eyebrows tightened.

“Mom?”

Loretta suddenly looked uncomfortable.

I reached into my purse and removed my phone.

“I thought it was strange that you insisted on controlling every payment.”

I tapped the screen.

“So I checked.”

The ballroom became completely silent.

“Yesterday morning, the hotel sent me an email confirming that the original contract covered fifty guests, a fixed menu, and a thirty-thousand-dollar maximum.”

Grant stared at me.

“So?”

“So the additional orders were placed under a different authorization.”

I turned the phone toward the manager.

“An authorization bearing my name.”

The manager looked confused.

“I thought that was your signature.”

“It isn’t.”

Loretta’s face went pale.

Grant looked at his mother.

“Mom, what did you sign?”

She didn’t answer.

I continued.

“Three days ago, someone sent the hotel a scanned copy of my boutique’s business registration, my personal identification, and a forged authorization letter.”

A gasp came from somewhere near the back.

Grant’s face hardened.

“That’s ridiculous.”

“I agree.”

I smiled.

“That’s why I had the documents examined.”

I handed another folder to the banquet manager.

“The authorization is fraudulent.”

The manager opened it.

His expression changed immediately.

“I’ll need to contact our legal department.”

“You should.”

Grant grabbed my arm.

“You’ve gone too far.”

I pulled away.

“No. You did.”

He stared at me.

I lowered my voice.

“You knew about the guest list.”

“No, I didn’t.”

“You knew your mother invited 180 people.”

“I thought she was inviting a few extra relatives.”

“Grant.”

I looked directly into his eyes.

“There are 180 place settings.”

He said nothing.

“And your mother told the hotel that I had agreed to pay for everything.”

His silence told me more than any confession could have.

Then I saw something on his face.

Recognition.

Fear.

That was when I knew.

He knew.

Maybe not every detail.

But enough.

I opened my phone again.

“There is one more thing.”

Loretta suddenly stood.

“Enough.”

“No.”

My voice remained calm.

“Ten days ago, I transferred thirty thousand dollars to you.”

“Yes.”

“You told me the money would be deposited directly with the hotel.”

“Yes.”

“So why did the hotel receive only twelve thousand?”

Her mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

The room erupted.

Guests started whispering.

Grant turned toward his mother.

“Where did the other eighteen thousand go?”

Loretta’s composure finally cracked.

“It was for expenses!”

“What expenses?” I asked.

She glared at me.

“You don’t understand how expensive these things are.”

“I understand perfectly.”

I opened the final document.

“The money went into an account belonging to Loretta Vance Events LLC.”

Grant stared.

“What?”

I looked at him.

“Your mother’s private event company.”

His face went blank.

“She charged me a management fee.”

Loretta snapped.

“You can afford it!”

“And then,” I continued, “she used my money to finance a party she couldn’t afford, invited her entire extended family, upgraded the food and alcohol, and expected me to cover the difference.”

Nobody spoke.

I placed the original invoice on the podium.

“I said yes when you demanded that I pay.”

I looked at Loretta.

“But I never said I would pay your bill.”

Then I looked at Grant.

“I said yes because I wanted to see how far you’d take this.”

Grant’s expression changed.

“What does that mean?”

I smiled.

“I discovered the scheme two days ago.”

The room went still.

“I could have canceled tonight’s party.”

A pause.

“But I didn’t.”

Loretta stared at me.

“Why?”

“Because I wanted everyone you invited to hear the truth from me.”

I turned toward the 180 guests.

“This celebration was supposed to be my engagement party.”

I held up the invoice.

“Instead, it became a forty-thousand-dollar fraud attempt.”

The banquet manager quietly stepped forward.

“Miss Delaney, security and our legal representative are on their way.”

Grant looked at me as if he had never seen me before.

“You planned this?”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You planned it.”

I removed my engagement ring.

Placed it on the podium.

And watched Grant’s face collapse.

“I simply decided to stop being the person you planned to exploit.”

Loretta whispered my name.

I looked at her one last time.

“You told me I was cheap.”

I smiled.

“No, Loretta.”

“I was careful.”

Then I walked away from the microphone.

Behind me, the ballroom exploded into arguments.

The party was over.

But the bill wasn’t.

And neither was the investigation into who had forged my signature.
