On the final afternoon of sixth grade, the classroom was full of the familiar noise of goodbyes. Desks were being cleared, notebooks were pushed into backpacks, and students moved from friend to friend signing yearbooks. In the middle of that rush, one student waited until most of the room had emptied before walking to my desk. He held out a small envelope and said only that he wanted me to have it.
Inside was a Starbucks gift card. I thanked him warmly and assumed it was a simple end-of-year present chosen by his family. He smiled, seemed relieved that I liked it, and left to join the others. Nothing about the card itself looked unusual, yet the quiet seriousness with which he gave it to me stayed in my mind.
A few days later, I stopped at the coffee shop and mentioned the gift while ordering. The manager recognized the card and asked whether it had come from a young boy. When I said yes, she told me what had happened. For nearly a month, he had visited the store with handfuls of spare change.
