8 Easy Ways To Keep Snakes Away From Your Yard

Posted on August 7, 2026 By Aga Co No Comments on 8 Easy Ways To Keep Snakes Away From Your Yard

Snakes don’t knock. They slide in, silent and sudden, sometimes appearing where you least expect them—right beside the garden path, underneath the porch, or even across your bare toes. One moment you’re peacefully weeding tomatoes or watering flowers, and the next your heart is pounding out of your chest as something long and silent disappears beneath the nearest bush.

For many homeowners, that single encounter is enough to make every pile of leaves or patch of tall grass suddenly look suspicious. You don’t necessarily want to kill the snake. Most snakes are simply passing through, searching for food, shelter, or a cool place to hide. You just want them gone—safely, naturally, and preferably for good.

The good news is that you can make your yard far less attractive to snakes without intentionally harming them. Instead of focusing only on chasing away the snake you happened to see, focus on removing the things that invited it there in the first place.

Start by reducing their food sources. Snakes often follow prey, especially rodents, frogs, insects, and other small animals. Secure compost containers, clean up fallen fruit, and avoid leaving pet food outside overnight. Move bird feeders farther from patios and the house when practical, because spilled seed can attract mice and other rodents—and those rodents can eventually attract the snakes that hunt them.

Next, remove their hiding places.

Keep grass trimmed and weeds under control, particularly around foundations, sheds, fences, and heavily used areas of the yard. Clear away unnecessary brush piles, thick vegetation, old boards, rocks, and stacked lumber where snakes can hide from predators and escape the heat.

Firewood should also be stored neatly and, when possible, away from the house rather than directly against an exterior wall. The fewer dark, protected hiding spots your yard provides, the less comfortable it becomes for snakes looking for shelter.

Some homeowners also experiment with strong-smelling plants or homemade scent-based deterrents around patios and play areas. Lemongrass is sometimes planted around frequently used spaces, while citrus, cinnamon, or clove scents are commonly suggested as natural repellents. However, these methods should be treated as secondary measures rather than guaranteed solutions; removing food, shelter, and entry points is far more important.

Next, protect your home itself.

Walk around the exterior and look carefully for openings. Seal cracks in foundations, gaps beneath doors, damaged vents, and tears in screens so a curious snake can’t follow prey or cool air inside. Pay particular attention to garages, basements, crawl spaces, and areas where pipes or cables enter the building.

Avoid relying on mothballs as a snake repellent. They contain pesticides intended for specific labeled uses and can be dangerous to children, pets, and wildlife if used improperly. A cleaner, less cluttered property with properly sealed entry points is a safer approach.

And if a snake does appear, give it space. Never attempt to grab or handle a snake you cannot confidently identify. Keep children and pets away and allow the animal an escape route whenever possible.

For stubborn visitors, contact a local wildlife professional or animal-control service that handles humane snake removal. Relocation rules can vary by location, and moving a snake yourself may be unsafe for both you and the animal.

Ultimately, the goal isn’t to wage war on wildlife. It’s to quietly change the environment around your home so snakes have fewer reasons to visit.

Remove their food. Take away their hiding places. Seal their entrances. Keep frequently used areas open and maintained.

Do those things consistently, and that frightening movement through the grass may become a much rarer sight—leaving the snakes somewhere safer and giving you back the peace of mind to enjoy your own yard.
