Ethan frowned.
“There must be a mistake,” he replied, pulling out the card and looking at it carefully before asking the waiter to try again.

“I’m so sorry,” he whispered to Claire. “I don’t know what’s happening.”

“Did they say why?” Claire asked.
The waiter nodded.
“They simply said they remembered what it felt like to be young, nervous, and hoping a first date would go well. They wanted to help.”
For several seconds, neither of them spoke.
The declined card no longer seemed like the biggest part of the evening.

As they walked outside into the cool night air, Ethan admitted how terrified he had been.
“I honestly thought you’d never want to see me again.”
Claire smiled.
“Actually,” she replied, “I learned more about you in those five minutes than I did during the previous three hours.”
He looked at her curiously.
“You didn’t get angry. You didn’t blame anyone else. You were embarrassed because you wanted to keep your word. That tells me a lot.”
Ethan quietly thanked her.
Not for paying.
