Woman comes out as abrosexual after 30-year journey

For many people, attraction feels steady and predictable throughout their lives. For others, however, it changes over time in ways that can be confusing, emotional, and difficult to explain. When feelings shift from one period of life to another—or even disappear entirely for a while—people are sometimes told they are simply confused, seeking attention, or unable to make up their minds. Those reactions can leave individuals feeling isolated and misunderstood. But what if the real problem isn’t the person experiencing these changes, but the lack of language to describe what they have always felt? For some, discovering the term **abrosexual** provides long-awaited clarity and validation after years of uncertainty.

For Emma Flint, finding that word became a turning point rather than simply adopting another label. Throughout much of her life, her experience of attraction changed in ways that never seemed to fit the categories she encountered. At different times she felt primarily attracted to women, at other times to men, sometimes to more than one gender, and occasionally experienced little or no attraction at all. Each stage felt genuine while it lasted, yet because those feelings evolved over time, she often worried that others would view her as indecisive or insincere. Discovering the concept of abrosexuality helped her realize that her experiences were not unusual for everyone and did not make her identity any less authentic.

Abrosexuality is generally understood as a sexual orientation in which a person’s pattern of attraction changes over time. These changes may involve the gender or genders someone feels attracted to, the intensity of that attraction, or periods during which little or no attraction is experienced. For some people, these shifts happen over days or weeks. For others, they unfold gradually across months or years. Importantly, the experience is different for every individual, and no single pattern defines what it means to be abrosexual.

Because society often expects sexual orientation to remain constant, people whose experiences change over time may face misunderstanding or skepticism. Friends, relatives, or even members of LGBTQ+ communities may mistakenly assume they are simply uncertain, experimenting, or changing their minds. Those assumptions can make it difficult for individuals to talk openly about their experiences, especially when they already feel unsure about how to describe what they are going through. Finding a word that reflects their lived experience can therefore offer comfort, community, and a greater sense of self-understanding.

It is also important to recognize that every person’s journey is unique. Not everyone whose attraction changes identifies as abrosexual, and not every abrosexual person experiences the same kinds of shifts. Some may notice frequent changes, while others experience long periods of stability followed by gradual transitions. Likewise, periods of little or no attraction may be part of some people’s experiences but not others. Human sexuality is complex, and no single label can fully capture every individual’s story.

Understanding concepts such as abrosexuality encourages a broader appreciation of the diversity of human experiences. Rather than assuming everyone fits neatly into fixed categories, it reminds us that identity can be deeply personal and may evolve throughout life. For some individuals, having language that reflects their experience provides reassurance that they are not alone and that their feelings are valid, even if they differ from what others expect.

Ultimately, labels are tools for communication, not rules that everyone must follow. Some people find great comfort in identifying with a specific term, while others prefer not to use labels at all. What matters most is allowing individuals the freedom to describe their own experiences honestly and respectfully. Whether someone’s attractions remain constant or change over time, every person’s journey deserves understanding rather than judgment. When we make space for people to define themselves in their own words, we create a more compassionate environment where authenticity is valued over assumptions, and where everyone has the opportunity to feel seen, respected, and understood.
