When Missy discovered she was pregnant again in 2002, her heart overflowed with excitement. Although she already had two sons she deeply loved, this new pregnancy brought fresh joy and hope into their home. She began imagining tiny baby clothes, late-night lullabies, and the special connection her children would one day share. For both Missy and Jase, it felt like the beginning of another beautiful chapter in their lives together.
But that happiness was heartbreakingly interrupted.
Around eight to ten weeks into the pregnancy, Missy suffered a miscarriage. By that point, the baby already felt real to her. She had shared the news with family and friends, dreamed about the future, and emotionally connected to the life growing inside her. That made the loss even more painful. There had been enough time for hope to settle deeply into her heart before it was suddenly taken away.
The miscarriage affected her in every possible way. Beyond the physical pain, Missy later spoke openly about the emotional devastation she experienced afterward. She not only had to grieve the loss of her baby but also endure a medical procedure connected to the pregnancy loss, which made everything feel even more final and heartbreaking. She was left carrying sadness, confusion, and the haunting thoughts of what might have been.
Doctors later explained that the pregnancy had been ectopic, also known as a tubal pregnancy. This happens when a fertilized egg implants inside the fallopian tube instead of the uterus. Such pregnancies cannot survive and can become extremely dangerous for the mother if not treated quickly. Even knowing the medical explanation, however, did little to ease the emotional pain. For parents, the loss is never just medical — it is the loss of dreams, plans, and a future they had already started imagining.
Through that painful season, Missy and Jase leaned heavily on each other, their faith, and the support of loved ones around them. Slowly, they began healing.
Then, sometime later, they received hopeful news once again.
Missy was pregnant.
This time, the excitement came mixed with caution. After experiencing such deep heartbreak, hope no longer felt simple. Fear followed closely behind every doctor’s appointment and every milestone. Still, they allowed themselves to believe happiness might return.
Not long afterward, they learned they were expecting a daughter.
They decided to name her Mia, a name that quickly became precious to both of them. But alongside the joy came difficult news. Doctors informed the couple that Mia would be born with a congenital condition, meaning she would face physical challenges from the very beginning of her life.
The news brought complicated emotions.
They were grateful for the chance to welcome their daughter into the world, yet deeply worried about the struggles she might face. Thoughts of surgeries, treatments, and uncertain futures suddenly became part of the pregnancy journey.
When Mia was finally born, Missy felt overwhelmed with emotion the moment she held her daughter for the first time. Love flooded her heart instantly, but fear came with it. Questions raced through her mind about how Mia’s future would look, how difficult life might become for her, and whether their family would be strong enough to handle everything ahead.
Jase responded differently.
While he understood the seriousness of the situation, he chose to focus on the gift of Mia’s life rather than the obstacles attached to it. Where Missy felt fear, he tried to offer reassurance. Where she saw uncertainty, he saw strength, courage, and purpose waiting to unfold.
Together, they slowly realized something important: their family’s story might not look exactly the way they once imagined, but that did not make it any less beautiful. Through pain, loss, healing, and unexpected challenges, they discovered that love, faith, and resilience could carry them through even the hardest moments life placed before them.
