For Captain Jason Vance, an experienced pilot with thousands of flight hours under his belt, the sky had always been a haven. The weather was perfect for what started out as an entirely ordinary afternoon flight, providing a pristine picture of the expansive cityscape just over the horizon. The cabin’s occupants were content, reading novels, drinking drinks, and taking in the incredibly easy ride. Expecting a textbook arrival at the nearby international airport, Jason and his co-pilot were up in the cockpit finishing their normal descent checklist. As the sun sank lower in the sky, the clouds were painted in lovely shades of gold and amber, concealing the complete mayhem that was about to take place outside.
A small, unpredictable dot on the horizon was the first indication of trouble. Jason saw one big bird drifting abnormally near the aircraft’s flight path from his vantage point. Although encounters with wildlife are a known risk in flight, birds nearly always avoid commercial and private aircraft due to the intimidating size of the aluminum hull and the loud scream of the large jet engines. But this bird disregarded all instincts. It aggressively circled the cockpit windshield, locking onto the aircraft rather than swerving away. Jason assumed it was a transient anomaly and changed his altitude slightly to allow the creature room. His notion was quickly disproved when a second bird joined the first, followed by three more, and eventually a dozen, forming a close-knit, coordinated formation next to the fast-moving aircraft.
What began as a strange show quickly turned into a horrifying nightmare. The sky darkened as the aircraft approached the city limits, but not because of rain clouds but rather because of a huge, whirling vortex of thousands of birds rising from the canopy below. It appeared to be a well-planned military action. Numerous birds started purposefully hurling themselves at the plane, violently hitting the fuselage and swarming the wings. The sound of feathers and bone pounding on the metal hull within the cockpit resembled a powerful hailstorm. The realization that the avian swarm was actively attacking the plane with terrible persistence made Jason’s heart pound against his ribs.
As Jason struggled with the controls and tried to use evasive techniques to get away from the unrelenting flock, beads of sweat formed on his brow. As he ascended, the birds followed him, easily keeping up with the aircraft’s speed. He made a sharp left turn, but the feathery wall moved smoothly, obstructing their way and pushing them forward. Jason and his co-pilot were unable to understand why these creatures were acting in such a suicidally aggressive manner. The laws of nature seemed to have entirely collapsed. The vast metropolis loomed beneath them, and the possibility of a disastrous collision over a crowded region increased with each passing moment. Jason decided that breaking through the living cloud was their only chance, so he shoved the plane’s nose down into a sharp descent in the hopes that the creatures would be left behind by the quick rise in speed.
The last-ditch effort was a complete failure. Like a squadron of tiny fighter planes, the birds adjusted their wings and dove parallel to the falling aircraft. The entire cabin was shook by a loud explosion. A huge bird had been drawn straight into the engine on the starboard side. The cockpit console flashed red warnings in an instant, and the floorboards trembled with a terrible vibration. A dense cloud of black smoke billowed into the afternoon air as the damaged engine started to splutter and quit. Jason realized they would never reach the big metropolitan airport since propulsion was badly compromised and the controls were becoming heavy and sluggish.
As oxygen masks fell from the ceiling and loose objects flew through the aisle due to the abrupt drop in altitude, panic spread throughout the passenger compartment. They grieved, held hands, and prepared for the worst. Jason saw a ray of hope outside the window: a little, secluded airfield tucked up against the banks of a huge, far-off lake. He prepared the airplane for a terrifying emergency landing with just one working engine and a swarm of birds still obscuring his eyesight. Jason engaged the landing gear, battled the crosswinds, and bounced forcefully onto the gravel runway while skimming only a few feet above the tree line. The plane came to a stop just yards from the water’s edge as he applied the brakes, causing the tires to screech.
The cabin fell silent for a time, then everyone started crying and cheering with relief. Despite all the odds, the jet was structurally sound and they were still alive. But the struggle was far from over. Jason saw something terrifying as he peered out the cockpit window. When they landed, the thousands of birds had not scattered. Rather, they encased the aircraft in a thick, cramped siege by totally covering the surrounding ground. With their keen eyes focused on the metal tube, they covered the wings, the tail, and the surrounding gravel. They wanted something trapped inside the plane’s belly so badly that they were refusing to leave.
Jason realized he had to identify the cause of this strange occurrence before the birds breached the exterior, since airport security and emergency ground workers were hours away from this isolated strip. Jason took a large flashlight and went down into the small, dark cargo hold beneath the passenger deck, leaving his co-pilot in the cabin to calm the passengers. He saw that the birds’ frenzied banging outside was loudest close to a safe, unmarked wooden crate in the very rear of the cargo bay as he made his way past rows of suitcases and luggage.
Jason carefully walked over to the crate and forced open the top clasp. His throat tightened around his breath. Faintly shimmering under his headlamp, dozens of rare, well protected exotic bird eggs rested inside, securely ensconced in specially designed padded compartments. An international wildlife trafficking group had snuck them aboard the trip illegally, concealed deep within the regular luggage. The experienced pilot experienced a wave of profound insight in that moment. The birds outside weren’t assaulting the aircraft out of territorial aggressiveness or mindless malice. Their parents were in a precarious situation. The flock had risked their lives to pursue an airplane and save their abducted children after sensing the cries and distinct bio-frequencies of their unborn youngsters trapped within the metal beast thanks to a strong, remarkable evolutionary instinct.
Jason felt the full weight of the situation as he stood by himself in the dark cargo hold, staring at the frail lives crammed into crates. The overpowering sadness of nature’s passionate maternal love, the danger of the emergency landing, and the adrenaline of the struggle for survival all collided within him. The rugged, seasoned captain, permanently altered by the realization that love could make birds of the sky fight an engine of steel, slumped against a stack of luggage, buried his face in his hands, and broke down in deep, uncontrollable sobbing.
