From Rags to Riches How My Heartless Ex Husbands Betrayal Led Me to a Mysterious Billionaire and the Miracle of a Lifetime

It seemed as though the resources of a failing marriage were being rationed along with the oxygen itself at the antiseptic, gray law office. Adeline Marlowe was sitting on the edge of a mahogany chair with her hands shielding her protruding tummy. She was six months pregnant and experiencing all the vulnerability that comes with carrying a new life, but the guy who had vowed to love her was staring at her with the clinical disinterest of a stranger. Nick glanced to his watch instead of her eyes. With a flick of his wrist, he shoved a bundle of divorce papers across the table, urging her to sign fast in a clipped, icy voice. For the afternoon, he had “other plans,” which obviously had nothing to do with the woman he had been living with for seven years or the children she was carrying.

Adeline clutched the pen, heartbroken and drowning in incredulity. In just a few minutes, the life she had imagined—the nursery they had chosen, the Sunday mornings spent together, the expanding family—was being taken apart. Nick had expressed his desire for a clean break. He had led her into a corner where she felt she had to give up everything in order to get away from his icy stare in his quest for a fresh, unburdened existence. The shared savings accounts, the high-rise apartment, and the future stability she had depended on were all signed away. Because her dignity was the only thing she had left to protect, she only took the bare minimum of assistance—a small amount in comparison to what she deserved. The weight of her reality descended upon her like lead as she eventually left that building and entered a sudden, intense downpour. The only person left to battle for the three heartbeats pounding inside her was her, and she was almost broke.

Adeline took cover on a city bus, her head spinning and the chilly rain seeping through her coat. She just needed a spot to sit where the world wasn’t moving so quickly; she didn’t have a destination. She tried to breathe and reassure herself that she was strong enough for this as the bus stumbled through the city traffic. However, the universe determined she hadn’t been sufficiently tested halfway through the trip. Her abdomen burst in a quick, searing pain that stole her breath and sent a spike of sheer horror through her spirit. Her fist tightened on the metal railing of the seat in front of her as she gasped. The passengers’ low murmur became a wave of concern. She could see the blurry faces of strangers through the mist of her pain, their expressions ranging from fear to sympathy.

A presence appeared next to her just as the darkness was about to close in. It was a localized storm of quiet rather than the other passengers’ frenetic activity. With smooth, commanding movements, a man in a dark, fitted coat moved forward. He saw that she needed assistance and took action without asking. His voice was a steady, low anchor in the tumult as he introduced himself as Lucien Arkwright. As he motioned for the driver to stop, he carefully moved her out of her seat, his strength bearing her weight. She was dropped into a waiting car’s luxurious leather upholstery in a matter of seconds. Adeline’s phone rang in her pocket as the car raced in the direction of a private hospital. Nick had sent the message. It was chilly, cunning, and full of a subtle menace regarding his “rights” to the kids, a message that made it obvious he saw them more as property to be managed than as human beings to be cherished. Lucien leaned out and carefully removed the phone from her shaking fingers as he saw the color drain from her face. He firmly assured her that she was safe, that she only needed to concentrate on the lives inside of her, and that he would take care of the outside world.

A flurry of bright lights and anxious voices greeted them when they arrived at the hospital. The medical staff operated with a frenzied, practiced precision since the triplets were arriving much earlier than expected. Adeline sensed that she was being carried away into a sea of monitors and scrubs. She glimpsed Lucien standing in the doorway through the fog of anguish and the scary uncertainty of an early delivery. He didn’t try to be the hero and wasn’t invasive. His presence was an odd but pleasant mystery as he only remained there, a silent sentry making sure the best care was being given.

The next few hours were a jumble of medical intervention and pure willpower. Adeline’s first reaction upon opening her eyes in the recovery room after the world finally stopped spinning was a crippling fear. A sob sprang in her throat as she grabbed for her stomach and discovered it was empty. However, a nurse suddenly materialized beside her, her face beaming with a kind grin. “They’re here, Adeline,” she whispered, leaning in to change everything. They are also flawless.

The babies had come with a fighting spirit against all the difficulties. Tiny yet strong, two boys and a girl had entered a world that had attempted to abandon their mother. When Adeline was eventually wheeled into the newborn ward to see them, all of the resentment she had felt in the lawyer’s office vanished when she saw their little, rhythmic breaths beneath the warm lights of the incubators. It didn’t matter that she had lost her flat. The financial accounts were irrelevant. Even Nick’s treachery seemed like a far-off, fading echo. At that moment, she understood that she had been left with the only things that really mattered, not nothing at all.

Adeline started to see her life more clearly during the calm days of her recuperation as she watched her kids get stronger. Lucien Arkwright showed himself to be a wealthy man who had been touched by her situation on the bus and continued to be a steadfast supporter. He respected the resilience he had witnessed in her at her lowest point and provided her a bridge to a new life, not out of sympathy. With his assistance, Adeline was able to get a house with flooring that were truly illuminated by the sun and a legal team that made sure Nick could never again use his shadow to darken their door.

Adeline came to the realization that her marriage had been a cage rather than a foundation. Nick’s exit had been an evacuation rather than a catastrophe. She was constructing a reality based on the purest form of truth in place of the false picture of the future that she had lost. She silently vowed as she gazed at her three adorable children. The mother who stayed, battled, and had the guts to start afresh would define their lives instead of the father who left. The woman who had stepped forth into the rain with shaking hands had changed. For the first time in her life, Adeline Marlowe, a mother of three, was in her right place. The legacy was just getting started; the treachery was over.
