My Husband Asked For Paternity Test after I Gave Birth – He Was ‘Shocked’ When He Read the Results

I thought it would be one of the happiest days of my life when I gave birth to our daughter, Sarah, five weeks ago. After all, I had been fantasizing of this moment with my husband, Alex, for the past two years of our marriage. However, the moment I saw the expression on his face, everything changed.

“You’re… sure?” he inquired nervously, gazing at our baby girl’s blond hair and delicate blue eyes.

Confused, I looked up from holding our little baby. “Yes, about what?”

“You are aware that she is… mine.”

My stomach fell as he looked aside, avoiding my eyes. As I pondered what he had just implied, the tension in the room increased.

He said softly, “She doesn’t look anything like us,” pointing to his and my dark hair and eyes while his eyes darted between Sarah and me. His tone was almost accusing.

I tried to sound cool despite my racing heart as I stated, “Alex, babies can have lighter hair and eyes at birth.” “It has no significance. Over time, her characteristics will most likely change.

However, he didn’t appear persuaded. He simply continued to look suspiciously at Sarah while rubbing his temple and moving his palm to his face.

“I… Jennifer, I’m not sure. I must be certain. At last, he remarked, “I need a paternity test.”

The words were like a smack. I looked for any hint of the man I had married, the one who had once claimed to have total faith in me, on his face. But here he was, raising questions about our daughter’s ancestry during what should have been a happy occasion.

My hands clenched around Sarah in a protective manner as my heartbeat quickened. “Alex, you can’t be serious.”

He remained unwavering. “Yes, I am. This test is necessary for me. And I don’t think we can proceed if you disagree.

There was an oppressive stillness in the room as the ultimatum hung thick in the air. For a brief moment, I wanted to yell, demanding to know why he would now chose to doubt my allegiance and turn the first few days of our newborn into a nightmare.

Instead, too startled to protest, I simply nodded. “All right, Alex. Do what needs to be done.

My husband claimed he needed “space” after we got back from the hospital, so he stayed at his parents’ place while we awaited the test results.

I felt more alone than ever when he departed, caught in a maelstrom of restless nights, soiled diapers, and never-ending thoughts about what he had said. Every day, my sister Emily supported me and helped me take care of Sarah while I healed from giving birth.

She was enraged because she could see how Alex’s absence was affecting me.

One night as she rocked Sarah to sleep, she yelled, “I can’t believe he’s doing this.” “Instead of hiding out at his parents’ house, he ought to be here with you.”

I let out a sigh as fatigue began to weigh heavily on me.

“I have no idea what went wrong. Em, he seems to be a different person. At the hospital, I didn’t even recognize him.

I exhaled nervously as she placed a comforting hand on my shoulder. Even Emily, who had always been my pillar of support, was powerless to repair the harm Alex’s charges were causing to my heart.

A week after he departed, his mother called, as if his suspicions weren’t enough.

I hoped she was phoning to see how the baby and I were doing, perhaps even to provide some assistance. However, her words pierced me like a knife as soon as I picked up.

“Jennifer, I’ve heard about this paternity test,” she stated abruptly. To be clear, I’ll make sure you have nothing if the test results indicate that the baby isn’t Alex’s! I’ll stop at nothing to get you to the cleaners!

Startled by her animosity, I clutched the phone. You can’t be serious, Mrs. Johnson. Despite my trembling voice, I managed to say, “Sarah is Alex’s daughter, and I’d never do anything to hurt him.”

She said, “Spare me the explanations.” “We’ll observe the results of the test. Until then, if you’ve been lying, don’t expect anything from our family!

She hung up, leaving me stunned and numb. I had always believed that we got along well and that she valued me. But now that I was battling for the right to remain with my own family, it seemed like I was the enemy.

Soon after, I called Emily and informed her about the discussion, scarcely able to contain my tears.

My voice cracked as I continued, “She’s already making threats about lawyers and money.” “Em, she believes I cheated.”

Emily clenched her jaw. “That is not credible. Jenn, you’ve done nothing wrong. Give the test to them. They will have to retract their statements once it is established that Sarah is Alex’s daughter.

However, I wasn’t entirely certain. Could things between Alex and myself ever return to as they were, even if the test revealed everything?

My spouse finally called after what seemed like a lifetime but was actually just a few weeks.

After we got the paternity results yesterday, he said in a cold voice, “The results are in.” That night, he stopped by to read them with me, his expression filled with a mixture of fear and resolve.

As we sat down in the living room and he opened the envelope, I could feel my heartbeat in my throat. I saw his countenance change from stiff to wide-eyed with disbelief as he silently skimmed the page. His mouth fell open, and he simply stared at them while he took in what they had spoken.

After feeling deceived for weeks, I became enraged and exclaimed, “I told you so.” I couldn’t contain my bitter laughter. He’d received the response he’d demanded, and it was precisely what I’d said all along, despite everything he’d put me through and the painful charges!

My spouse’s face flushed. He looked at me angrily as he crumpled the paper in his hands.

“You find this amusing, Jennifer?” he yelled, raising his voice. “I found this difficult as well!”

“Difficult for you?” Unable to control my own voice, I answered.

“Alex, you accused me of cheating while I was by myself with our newborn daughter, recuperating from childbirth. You abandoned me to handle everything by myself, and your mother’s threats—

“What threats?” he said, his rage turning to bewilderment.

I inhaled steadily, gaining the courage to explain.

She told me over the phone that if Sarah wasn’t yours, she would see to it that I was “taken to the cleaners.” She made it very obvious that if the test results were different, I was not welcome in her household.

I could see the knowledge dawn on Alex as his expression darkened. He glanced at the crumpled paper before turning back to face me.

“I was unaware. I was unaware that things had progressed to that extent.

There was a brief pause before Emily, who had been upstairs with Sarah, descended. She glanced at both of us before focusing on Alex.

“Perhaps you ought to go,” she remarked in a chilly tone.

He stood up, still holding the paper, and walked away without saying anything more. After he left, the door clicked shut, and I collapsed into the couch, letting go of my anxiety. Emily took a seat next to me and embraced me.

“Jenn, you did nothing wrong,” she muttered. “If you want him to win back your trust, he must do so now.”

My mother-in-law (MIL) called two or three hours after he returned to his parents’ house to “clear his head.” She reprimanded me this time for laughing in my husband’s face because it was equivalent to “kicking him while he was down.”

She also sent more nasty SMS this morning with the same message. The days that followed were peaceful, and I concentrated on Sarah, treasuring her tiny coos and giggles while attempting to forget about my husband’s accusations.

However, his absence tormented me, and a part of me yearned for resolution, even if it meant having another challenging discussion. He arrived at our door three days later, looking messy and regretful. I opened the door for him, and we took a seat where we had previously read the test results.

His eyes softened as he glanced at Sarah, who was soundly resting in my arms.

“Jenn,” he said in a scarcely audible whisper, “I’m so sorry.” I allowed my fears to destroy everything.

I gave him a stern look.

“Alex, you humiliated me in addition to doubting me. You let your mother intimidate me, you accused me of cheating, and you abandoned me. I’m not sure if things will ever return to how they were.

He swallowed hard and nodded.

“I am aware of that. And I’ll go to any lengths to put things right. Please give me another chance to show myself; I don’t expect you to forgive me immediately. For us, for Sarah’s sake.

I looked at him for a while, noticing the regret in his eyes. A part of me wanted to keep him out of my life in order to protect myself from any harm in the future. However, there was another part of me that wanted to give him an opportunity to make amends because it still recalled the love we had developed over the course of two years.

I inhaled deeply, allowing my hurt and rage to temporarily subside.

“Alex, I’m not sure how to trust you at this time. Finally, though, I answered, “I’ll try for Sarah’s sake.”

With a soft but determined grip, he grabbed for my hand.

I’m grateful, Jenn. I’ll go to any lengths to regain your confidence. More than anything, I adore you both.

For the first time in weeks, I let myself experience a slight
