David Letterman’s question that left Jennifer Aniston very uncomfortable

Posted on March 1, 2026 By Aga Co No Comments on David Letterman’s question that left Jennifer Aniston very uncomfortable

David Letterman was once hailed as a master of late-night television, celebrated for his quick wit, charm, and the way he could make even the biggest Hollywood stars laugh. Yet, looking back, not all of his interviews have aged gracefully — at least, not in the eyes of critics or the public. Some moments that once seemed like harmless humor now appear glaringly inappropriate, especially when revisited in today’s cultural context.

One encounter, in particular, involved Hollywood star Jennifer Aniston. At first glance, it seemed like just another talk-show segment: a famous actress promoting a movie, a host asking questions, and a live audience filling in the background laughter. But watching it today, the discomfort of the exchange is impossible to ignore.

The incident occurred in 2006, when Jennifer Aniston appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman to promote The Break-Up, a romantic comedy she starred in alongside Vince Vaughn, who also co-wrote and produced the film. The interview quickly became memorable — for reasons beyond the usual banter of late-night television.

Right from the start, the conversation took an awkward turn when Letterman fixated on Aniston’s legs. He repeatedly complimented them throughout their discussion, making them the center of attention despite Aniston’s evident discomfort. Dressed in a black button-down blouse paired with black shorts, Aniston became, intentionally or not, the focus of his admiration. The cameraman seemingly followed suit, zooming in to emphasize what Letterman kept commenting on.

“That’s a tremendous outfit,” he remarked, leaning in. “And the reason that’s a tremendous outfit is because you have tremendous legs. Fantastic legs. You can only wear that if you have lovely, well-shaped, muscular, lengthy legs.”

Aniston, clearly taken aback, attempted to downplay his comments with humor, explaining that she had chosen shorts simply because of the heat. But Letterman didn’t let the topic drop. As the conversation moved forward, he circled back to her legs again, saying, “Your legs, you’ve got something there.” Fans and viewers at the time were already cringing, and today the exchange is even more uncomfortable in retrospect.

As if that weren’t enough, Letterman shifted gears abruptly and pressed Aniston on her rumored relationship with Vince Vaughn. He even inquired whether it had been Vaughn’s idea for her to appear naked in the movie — a question that caught Aniston off guard. She deftly deflected, suggesting that if he wanted the answer, he should have asked Vaughn himself during his appearance on the show.

At the time, the public wasn’t fully aware that Aniston had started dating Vaughn while filming The Break-Up. In a later interview, she would reveal that Vaughn had played an important role in helping her heal after her highly publicized divorce. Despite discussing Vaughn, Letterman couldn’t resist returning to the topic of her legs. “I can’t get over your legs, I’m telling you. You got something there,” he said again. Later, he added, “I hope to God somebody at the house TiVoing this because I can’t stop looking at this shot.” While the exact shot he referenced was unclear, Aniston’s discomfort suggested it was yet another moment focused on her body rather than the conversation at hand.

This wasn’t the first time Letterman had made Aniston visibly uncomfortable. In a now-infamous 1998 interview, he grabbed her neck and even sucked on a strand of her hair. Aniston, trying to maintain composure, wiped her hair with a tissue he handed her — an act that made the exchange awkward and widely criticized. Yet, as always, Aniston handled herself with grace, continuing the conversation without public complaint.

Despite these difficult moments, Aniston returned to The Late Show two years later. This time, she appeared in a chic pink party dress, reminding audiences not only of her beauty but of her professionalism and resilience. While clips of this appearance have recently gone viral, many viewers focus on her legs, overlooking the subtle gestures that show her poise and thoughtfulness.

During that later appearance, Aniston was promoting Marley & Me and also gave Letterman a small gift. “It’s an early Christmas present,” she said, smiling. This moment showed a different side of Aniston: gracious, confident, and in control of her narrative. While she deftly navigated questions about her relationship with John Mayer and other personal matters, she also used the opportunity to demonstrate generosity and composure — proving that even after uncomfortable interviews, she could return, command respect, and leave a positive impression.
