Melania Trump’s time as First Lady of the United States, like her husband Donald Trump’s presidency, has been a turbulent journey. While she has made a few public appearances, Melania has largely remained a private figure. However, a recent poll sheds light on how Americans view her role as First Lady, offering a comparison with other First Ladies.
Before returning to the White House with her husband in January last year, Melania Trump made it clear that her second term as First Lady would be different. The Slovenian-born former model announced that she would divide her time between Washington, Palm Beach, and New York City, while still fulfilling her official duties.
Although she has continued with her Be Best initiative, her second term has largely focused on her documentary. She revealed the film’s production shortly before Donald Trump’s second presidential inauguration.
Reports suggest that Amazon paid $40 million for the rights to the documentary, which was released in January. The film has received mixed reviews, though Melania herself expressed pride in the final product.
“I’m very proud of the film. Some people may like it, some may not, and that’s their choice,” she told CNN just before the release. “We achieved what we set out to do. For me, it’s already a success. I’m proud of what we accomplished.”
New Poll Reveals Americans’ Views on Melania Trump as First Lady
While Donald Trump’s approval ratings have fluctuated ahead of the midterm elections, many wonder how Americans perceive his wife, Melania. A recent YouGov poll provides some insights.
According to the poll, conducted online among 2,255 adult citizens between February 2–5 and February 3–5, Melania has a -16 approval rating. This is lower than that of former First Lady Jill Biden, who has a -9 approval rating. However, Melania’s rating is slightly better than Hillary Clinton’s, who recorded a -17 approval rating.
Other former First Ladies have much higher approval ratings. Nancy Reagan enjoys a +25 approval rating, Lady Bird Johnson sits at +23, Rosalynn Carter is at +32, and Barbara Bush holds a +21 approval rating. Michelle Obama and Laura Bush also have +21 and +19 approval ratings, respectively.
Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis: The Most Popular First Lady
The most popular First Lady in history, according to the survey, is Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, the wife of President John F. Kennedy. She served as First Lady from 1961 to 1963 and boasts an impressive +56 approval rating.
Melania’s approval rating was notably higher among Republican voters than Democrats.
