I planned to surprise my husband at work, but he was already on leave.

Posted on May 21, 2025 By Aga Co No Comments on I planned to surprise my husband at work, but he was already on leave.

I had planned to surprise my husband by bringing him lunch at work, but I found out he was on leave. The next day, I followed him because I was confused and suspicious. At my sister’s house, I uncovered a shocking truth. Now, I’m questioning everything I thought I knew about my family and marriage.

Last Tuesday, I had everything planned. I made his favorite dish, lasagna, all morning while the kids were at school. I thought it would be a nice surprise for him. What husband wouldn’t love a surprise visit from his wife with home-cooked food?

When I walked into his office, the receptionist looked at me with confusion. When she saw the lasagna in my hands, she asked, “Are you here for Ben?” I replied, “Yes, I just meant to bring him lunch.” She seemed unsure, then said, “They’ve been away for two weeks.” I stood there, shocked, trying to process what she just said. Time off? But Ben had told me all week that he was working late.

A cold sweat formed on my forehead, and my stomach twisted. I thanked her and left, trying to make sense of it when I got home. Maybe there was some misunderstanding. But how could a misunderstanding last two weeks? I had a strong feeling something wasn’t right. So, like any suspicious wife would, I decided to follow him the next day.

The next morning, I called my mom and asked her to watch the kids, saying I needed to run some errands. She agreed, unaware of the turmoil running through my mind. I went after Ben, staying at a distance to observe. He drove across town and stopped at my sister Kate’s house. I watched as he got out of the car, and Kate came outside, smiling as she hugged him before leading him inside. My mind raced—was Ben seeing my sister instead of me? I couldn’t believe it, but nothing else seemed to make sense. Tears filled my eyes from the pain of betrayal.

I needed to know for sure. I parked my car a block away from Kate’s house and called my lawyer, Carla. She had helped us with legal matters before, so I trusted her judgment. I told her everything, my voice shaking with hurt and anger. Carla responded calmly, “Before you jump to conclusions, Julia, get some solid proof.” I knew she was right.

I went back to Kate’s house and tried to spy, feeling like a fool, but I had to uncover the truth. I peered through a window and saw Ben and Kate sitting at the kitchen table, eating lunch with a stack of papers in front of them. They seemed tense, as if they were afraid of being caught. What were they planning?

I was certain something was wrong. They weren’t just having an affair; they were up to something. My hands trembled as I snapped a few pictures with my phone. I needed proof to confront Ben with. I had no idea what to think at this point.

From my car, I called James, my brother-in-law. James had always been the smart one in the family, married to Kate for almost ten years. He was the calm and sensible one. I trusted him to help me figure this out.

“James, it’s Julia,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady. “I need to talk to you about Kate and Ben.” There was a pause. “Calm down, Julie,” he said. “What’s going on?” I shook my head, trying to hold back tears. “I think they’re having an affair.” James sighed. “Julia, you need to come here. Right now.”

I rushed back to Kate’s house, my heart pounding. James’ car was already parked outside when I got there. I crept around the house and peeked through the window again. Inside, I could hear snippets of their conversation. “Julia called me,” James said. “She’s really worried and thinks you two are together.” Ben replied, “That means she doesn’t know anything.” Kate said, “That’s great!”

It broke my heart. I couldn’t take it anymore. I stormed into the house, furious. “You rebels, you’re lying and cheating! How could you hurt me like this?” Kate and Ben were shocked. James stood up and tried to calm me down. “Julia, please let us explain.”

“Explain what?” I yelled. “That my husband is leaving me for my sister?” Tears streamed down my face as I screamed in agony.

Ben tried to calm me down. “Julia, it’s not what you think.” “I took some time off to plan a surprise for you.” I laughed bitterly. “A surprise? A surprise where we meet at Kate’s house every day?” Ben responded, his voice steady. “Yes. I had a plan to make your dream come true. You’ve always wanted to open a coffee shop, right?”

I blinked, confused. “What?”

Kate stepped forward, holding a stack of papers. “Ben bought a coffee shop for you with the money he got from his inheritance. We’ve been working on the business plan and all the formal stuff.” My anger started to fade, replaced by confusion and hope. “A coffee shop? For me?” Ben nodded and handed me a folder.

“Look, these are the papers. The lease, renovation plans, everything. I didn’t want to tell you until everything was in place. James and Kate are co-investors, so I wanted to make sure they were on board with everything.” As I looked through the papers, my tears blurred the words. Everything I had dreamed of was there—proof of Ben’s love and care. I collapsed into his arms, my knees giving way.

“Oh my goodness, Ben…” I gasped, feeling like a fool. “I’m so sorry. I thought… I thought you were…”

Ben held me tightly. “I know. I should have told you earlier, but I wanted to surprise you.” I sobbed into his chest. “I’m such a fool.”

“It’s okay, Julia. I understand why you felt that way. I love you, and I would never turn my back on you.”

I nodded, feeling the weight of my mistake. “Thank you, Ben. Thank you for everything.”

The next day, we signed the final papers for the coffee shop. It felt unreal. Walking into the cute little shop, smelling the fresh baked goods, made me so happy. Ben gave me a squeeze. “This is all for you, honey. I have faith in you.”

I laughed, tears of joy streaming down my face. “I love you, Ben. Thanks for believing in me.”

The coffee shop became magical because of the love and hard work we put into it. It became a place where dreams came true, and love and trust were the main ingredients in every recipe. I learned how vital trust and communication are in a relationship. Sometimes people misunderstand each other, but how we handle those misunderstandings is what truly matters.

As I stood in the coffee shop, smelling the fresh baked goods, I felt grateful for Ben’s unwavering support. We had weathered the storm together, stronger than before. If you’re struggling in your relationship, remember that trust and love can help you see the truth, and sometimes, those hidden things lead to the most beautiful surprises.
