According to a statement released by the City of La Mesa, Officer Craven had been traveling eastbound on Interstate 8 near Fairmount Avenue at approximately 10:24 p.m. on Monday, October 20. She was returning to La Mesa from San Diego Central Jail after completing her duties for the night when she noticed two motorists who had been in a collision. Without hesitation, she pulled over, stepped out of her vehicle, and began rendering aid—acting exactly as those who knew her said she always did, with instinctive compassion and unwavering commitment to serve.
While she was assisting the drivers, another vehicle approached and struck her. First responders rushed to the scene, and officers from the California Highway Patrol immediately attempted lifesaving measures. Despite their efforts, Officer Craven tragically succumbed to her injuries at the scene.

Through tears, he explained that Lauren’s desire to become a police officer came from a painful chapter in her own life. While she was in college, she was assaulted, and the detective who supported her through that trauma inspired her to pursue law enforcement.
“She wanted to be that good cop for anyone who needs me,” David said, remembering her words. Helping others wasn’t just a job for Lauren—it was her calling.
